Hello to the Canadian riders out there.

Looking at options/opinions on the centerstands for the DL650. Seems like most of the folks around here are going with the SW-Motech centerstand. What are the advantages of this stand over the Suzuki accessory stand?

But perhaps the bigger question is this....I'm looking for something to allow easier chain maintenance and cleaning, as well as allowing for more compact storage in the off-season. Looking at the prices for centerstands ($200 - $300) vs a race stand ($100), I'm having trouble justifying the extra cost. Plus the extra weight of the centerstand and (depending on opinions) potential ground clearance impact.

I mostly do day trips with a handful of 1 night trips and maybe one 3-4 day trip a year. Extended stints away from home where chain maintenance becomes necessary are very rare.

I thoroughly dislike dealing with non-Canadian suppliers due to shipping and border issues, so I'm soliciting opinions from the Canadian members of the board who have been down this road already. Have you added a centerstand and if so, who have you dealt with and what was the experience like?

My bike has the factory centre stand K4,650; as far as clearance goes, I don't think I've ever come close to scrapping it (some good rides to Whistler and Gold River), I use it primarily for chain maint. at home but for me, the one time I need to adjust the chain or fix a tire somewhere out in the boonies, will make it worth every penny.
Stand was on the bike when I bought it so no advice on that process.
I'd definately say spend the money and put one on.

I spent time in Cornwallis and Halifax in the Navy in Late 1980. I also have a relative in Dartmouth. Anyways, I bought my K4 650 Quicksilver ( the fastest color LOL) in March brand new. I was able to afford a center stand around June. The center stand is kind of like a radio/stereo in your car. You can do just fine without it but man it sure makes things alot better if you have one. Like our good friend Mayday says "Get one". I had my center stand put on by the good guys at North Shore Suzuki in Vancouver. OEM. I like it. I've never bottomed out, so far. I don't even think I've scraped the pegs. Depends on your style and what chances you want to take. I don't think the stock stand will interfer in almost all of your 95% street/ 5% secondary road use (if that is the case). I just purchased handguards to take the bite out of the colder temps. That will help break the wind and keep the bugs off your gloves in the summer time. Approx. $75.00.

I understand what your saying about ordering south of the border. I ordered a Laminar Lip a while ago for the windscreen, big improvement but not quite there yet. I paid almost double compared to our good friends in USA. After I converted to US coin and paid Cdn Duty it kind of sucked.

I've ridden around the Island Here. Made a trip from Vancouver to Whistler, Pemberton, Kamloops and back. Also went to Saskatoon via the Yellowhead, then took the #1 to Lethbridge, then switched to #3. Absolutely spectacular on the #3 HWY in BC. Do it if you get the chance. I would like to ride right across the country to Newfoundland and back (lived there, near Gander for a year when I was 17).

Hi Mayday, I live in Vancouver and have done the gold river trip on a KLR but have not been on my DL yet. How was Hurlley River road with the DL?

I haven't done the Hurt-me on the Dl yet (we call it the hurt-me because in my pickup truck the washboards normally rattle your fillings out of your mouth!)
I'm only now starting to take the Wee Strom off-road. As a long-time (~20yrs) street-only rider, the feeling of that front tire wandering around on the gravel is taking some time getting used to. So far I've done some logging roads around Squamish, next year hopefully I can progress from there.
The trip we did to Gold River in June was a blast! It was a group ride (which I normally avoid like the plague but was actually quite good) The Strom came out with flying colours - in fact, I had more than one person on more "sportier" type bikes ask me what I was riding; there was 5 bikes consistently leading the pack and the Strom was always one of them.
That road is amazing.

Anyway, getting back to the subject. :lol:
I installed the Suzuki stand in August, don't know why I waited so long. It cost $260.37 inc. taxes and was a breeze to install (yes, the springs were **!!** hard to put on, but not impossible). You're right, it makes chain oiling/tensioning easier and, if that's your only concern, you can buy a race-stand from Canadian Tire for $100. My main reason for installing it was I don't trust side-stands, these should come stock.
Your comments about the cost of importing from the US are correct - the main reason that I'm still 'bagless'. There appears to be no Canadian importers for quality accessories? The few places that I've e-mailed/phoned seem clueless.

BTW:
Ground clearance has not been an issue - maybe with fully loaded bags, if I ever find any! I looked at the angle I'd have to be at for it to be a problem - on Trailwings I aint goin' there! :lol:
