Hi!

After taking my Strom to Kazakhstan (I'm posting the RR on that section) I cam to the conclusion that it needs more ground clearance and more suspension travel, so I have decided that I am going to go down the Project WeeStrom 7.5 way. Due to budget limitations I am going to keep my rear shock for the moment and use raising links. This means that although I'll get the extra clearance, I won't get the extra travel at the back, but I'll have to save that for the future. I installed progressive Hyperpro springs front and rear and rebuilt the stock rear shock, so it'll have to do for the moment. However, I need to raise the front as well, so I have already got myself a pair of scrap front forks for 30$ and will soon be cutting and welding the damper rods (I didn't want to do it on mine, you never know what might go wrong...)

What I wanted to ask you all is the following:

I would also like to fit some cartridge emulators, since it seems that everybody agrees that they make a big difference for the better, but I am not sure which ones to use.

I would like to get opinions and advice on the following ones and/or other possible alternatives to consider. I use the bike everyday to get to work, on weekend trips and on longer trips over the holidays.

Cogent Dynamic Drop-In Cartridges
Ricor's Intiminators
Racetech's Fork Cartridge Emulators

I have two sets of springs - the stiffer Hyperpros and the stock ones. Both are progressive. Which ones do you reckon will work better with the new setup (cartridges and 4cm of extra travel)?

The longer travel lets you run softer springs, at least in theory. Whether the stock spring would be enough depends on your weight, how hard you're riding, and over what sort of terrain. Basically the more weight, more speed and rougher terrain will push you to stiffer springs.
Of the three options, all will help. The drop in cartridges the most, the other two a tick behind.

in relation to the back, you can see if you could get your hands on a second hand 1000c V 's rear shock (someone confirm this?) or newer stock L2 rear shock - they alll have extra 10mm travel which would help.


I have short inseam but have increased the fork travel this way by about 15-20mm, mainly to allow more rebound travel.

Ricor Intiminators and Racetech emulators have been around longer, and there is a lot of reading on what you can do to tune it, if you dont like the settings that they come with. That is not to say Cogent Dynamic cartridge is not as good. They all do the same thing, albeit differently.

From experiences on riding similarly set up bikes with both RT emulator & Intiminators, my opinion is that once properly tuned, emulators tend to deal with smaller hits better (ie smoother), intiminators tends to deal with bigger amplitude hits and brake dive better.

I prefer the Intiminators, but I tend to just throw the bike at things. If you appreciate a smooth ride, Ricor emulators.
Intiminators also have the advantage that you just drop them in and refill with light weight oil.

Rear is more expensive, my best guess is that the 2012+ DL 650 rear shock is the DL 1000 shock - almost any aftermarket shock will be better. If you go Ricor front, consider the Ricor rear, one of the less expensive rear shock sand the same 'clever' bits.

Thanks for the replies, the Ricor Intiminators and rear shock look tempting. Does anybody know whether Ricor will make a custom longer shock? It seems Cogent Dynamics do, at no extra cost.
