Hello my friends.

Seems my trusty Strom has developed a slow oil leak, or perhaps a weep (more accurately).

Trouble is, due to the combine forces of wind and gravity, and the slowness of the leak, I can't really tell where it's coming from. But, twice now I've spotted a drop forming on the little protuberances (now that's a word!) circled in the attached pic.

I'm anxious to root this out, because I have some big trips coming up this season and can't rest easy knowing I have a festering problem before I go.

Guesses and speculation gladly accepted.

wipe it all clean all the way as far up as possible, take it and ride and come back and use a flashlight with low light in the garage. Follow it up. Its there somewhere above that point. It could be as far up as your air filter if you use a K&N.

Just finished the cleaning part. Will try the low-light & flashlight thing next. Thanks, I hadn't heard that tip before.

Directly above is a head gasket. Hope that's not the problem though.
Yes, and above that is the valve cover, which was my first suspicion, as it was off this winter for valve adjustment. But those seem to be the cleanest areas of the front cylinders...

What about the coolant hose and connections?
Nothing obvious coming from the hoses (but they are black, so it's hard to tell - regardless, the substance leaking is pretty clearly oil, so (hopefully) that's not in the cooling hoses...

Do the clean and ride process, then toss some talc or baby powder on the area. It will highlight the oil and the path it took.
Thanks, I'll try that. I'm crossing my fingers that "the area" is visible (within line of site and not obscured by tank/frame etc).

One strange thing of note, in the course of removing my crash bars (for better engine access), I had to remove the long engine mounting cross bolt. I was surprised to see what looked like a film of engine oil on that bolt. Quite strange how oil would ever migrate (or leak) in that area.

That bolt goes through the cases and does in fact go where oil is. I've seen people with sv's who had a leak there after mounting frame sliders. Have to use a new washer and get a good seal. If that's your problem it's good news, as that's an easy fix.

The only seam in that area is the head gasket as another mentioned, or the base gasket but that's below. The cylinder is solid unless there's a crack which I highly doubt. I'd be surprised if the head gasket is leaking too for such a new bike but if you have a leak you have a leak. Look closely around the head gasket.

UPDATE: With the help of everyone's tips, I managed to track down the source of the leak: oil was oozing out from the front cylinder cam chain tensioner bolt, which was loosened and re-torqued as part of this winter's valve adjustment. That explains why I had oil pretty much coating everything, as the CCT bolt sits at the very top of the engine. Not wanting to go through the hassle of removing plastics and gas tank, I managed to get a wrench on the bolt, and hooking another wrench to it for leverage, was able to tighten it approx half a turn. A few hundred KM later and the problem seems resolved.

That is how I spell R E L I E F!
