I have an 05 V-strom 650 and am interested in doing the cam swap. I like the bike but having come from a sport bike it feels lacking in power. I’m very familiar with shim under bucket valves and have a shim kit. I know that to get the most out of the swap I would need to get a PCIII. The bike has 18K miles and is completely stock.

In reading some posts about the swap people are saying to use a gen 2 SV cam in the DL intake and a gen 1 SV cam in the DL exhaust.

I looked up part numbers for the 05 DL and SV. The intake cams are the same but the exhaust cams are different. On ebay I see a set of SV exhaust cams. Has anybody done just the exhaust cam swap?

I’ve done cam swaps on Yamaha WR’s, swapping just the exhaust from a YZ (motocross) to the WR (trail bike). On the earlier years one can retard the exhaust cam one tooth to get the YZ timing which moves the power band up in the range. Can this be done on the V-Strom?

Correction, the second paragraph should read...
In reading some posts about the swap people are saying to use a gen 2 SV intake cam in the DL intake and a gen 1 SV intake cam in the DL exhaust.

You can just use the second gen SV exhaust cam, that will work well. Don't use a first gen exhaust, those have less lift and duration, very close to the DL part.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I just scored a set on ebay. But I still wonder if the stock exhaust cam could be retarded a tooth to get the same effect.

No. Really bad idea. Timing won't make up for the lack of lift and duration. And a tooth is a huge change in timing.
