I've been looking at picking up another Vstrom after having regrets over selling my 650 about a year ago...
The used motorcycle market has a lot of bargins in the current economy and I've noticed that the price difference between used 650 and 1000 vstroms doesn't seem like much....under those circumstances would one be better off with the a 1000? In my area there seems to be more 1000CC used Vstroms to choose from than the 650's.

If I were buying new I'd get another 650....but it seems like the "bargin" may well be a used Vstrom 1000.

Thanks,
Rob Ray

You are probably right.

Listed my 2005 DL650 on advrider on a Thursday and it sold Friday for the full asking price, with another prospective buyer who stopped by in case the deal fell through and another who asked me to call and let him know if the bike was still available when he got out of work at 5.

Buy the bike you want... base it off of emotion instead of value or amount saved.

I just bought a Wee after selling my first one a few years back. I never looked for the 1000cc version. I wanted the lower price, lower insurance, lower weight and higher gas mileage. I like the SV650 power plant and it's more than enough bike for me to be happy.

Unless you have a real desire for the DL-1000, I'd say go with another Wee Strom.

But YMMV.

'Stroms don't seem to depreciate much

Last year when I was in the market for a 'Strom, I found that used 1000s seemed to be the same price as used 650s, with maybe 3-4 1000s for every 650 for sale.

I figured it was because more 1000s were at the 3-4 year 'I want a new bike' itch.

hijack for reverendlex...I can set you up with a good deal on an 08 Wee!!

Look in the classifieds!

On topic...there is no 'better' bike in a general sense among the two; it's a very personal decision based on what you expect out of the bike. I now have both and each one brings strengths to the table. I happen to prefer the 1000 now for my needs, but ANYBODY's MMV.

Just buy one and ride the thing!

I just did this due diligence for a couple months before buying mine a couple weeks ago.

Coming from a ZRX1200, I was very used to having gobs of power, and torque.

At the end of the day, I could have bought either, but the 650 was the bike I chose.

The general consensus, from every review and comparison I have read on the net, was buy the 1000 if you are planning a good bit of 2-up riding. If not, the 650 is the better choice.

The 650 outsells the 1000 by 4 to 1, is cheaper insurance, lighter, better mileage, smoother engine throughout the range, easier to sell and more nimble in the twisties and off-road.

There's a reason the 1000's tend to be listed and hang around longer, where the 650's get snapped up relatively quick.

I'm extremely happy with my choice to get the Wee instead of the Vee, but everyone differs in that regard, so it's nice to have options.

I decided on the 650 because it's the first bike I own, better gas millage, and I think it may cheaper to insure. I love it!
If you haven't already, I would suggest reading THE thread about this and see other people's opinions on each. A lot of them specify their uses (urban, dirt, 2up, touring, etc) so it may give you a better idea.
Are there any dealers in your area that may have some used ones that you could test drive?

Price of ownership is something you only deal with once.

Pleasure of ownership, however, is something you enjoy every single day.

Buy the bike you want based on your riding style, habits, skills, roads, etc.

It's more manly.

Just felt like trolling. :)

The reason so many people avoid the 1,000== they are just afraid of a rumor! It's not as wicked as people want to believe,it will do good on gas if you want it to, and most of the weight difference is the extra pipe! Face it boys (and girls) they are both actually the same bike, one just has a larger motor that puts out about as much hp as a 500cc inline four. Some people on here make these things sound like freak'in Godzilla out to destroy everything!!!!! BB

to wee or not to vee

When I was looking at V stroms, I wanted a bike for communting to work, I considered a used 03Vee, it had the bags I wanted, plus electronic cruise comtrol, a plus for my superslab needs, but I was not excited about some of the reported problems, with the Vs backfiring, and clutch problems. I went with the 07 wee, I have now, just passed 10k mies of ownership, not bad for one year. No problems at all! The wee has been a joy to ride and own. Pick the bike that will make you smile! That is all that matters.:D Folks on the site will have thier favorite version, maybe that is why they make both models! Dave
