Tusk 30 L aluminum side cases = $270-ish. The 40's are approx $289.

Givi side case mounts - $193.50. You'll have to drill some holes in the cases and mount them yourself, but these are decent racks to start with.

I went that route on a 650 Versys.... although I admit that I started with the XL size. Woof. These are Tusk 40L cases with Happy Trails mounts that later got switched out for a set of Givi mounts, which narrowed it by about five inches.

I have had lots of different top tier aluminum panniers and for the money Tusk cannot be beat. I have them on my 2007 R1200GS and love'em. There are also a few simple mods to make them even better.

Finally landed a set of Touratech pannier racks for one of the bikes. Having used Tusk panniers in the past I really like them as they are inexpensive and waterproof. What I don't like is Touratech charges $89.00 per pannier for their mounting hardware. Having seen a few DIY versions I set to...

I'd check Tour and Ride for the best prices on Givi stuff, and ponder what my time is worth vs. bolting on a system that works, looks good, and fits out of the box...

Or maybe start with Givi racks and come up with less ridiculously, eye-wateringly expensive boxes than the Givi Outback series, as oldjeep did.
Might consider the plastic Givi boxes, too, unless you really, truly have your heart set on aluminum.
Anyway, the Tusk boxes have excellent reviews over on ADVrider as well.
