Hi

I want to travel the skyline drive, blue ridge parkway, great smoky mountains area (dragon, moonshiner, devil's triangle, etc) for a while.

I want to know if the conditions would be nice if I leave Canada on last week-end of september and get back firt week-end of october. I plan a 9-days ride (3 days down, 3 days riding around robbinsville,nc, and 3 days back).

Lovely time of year...I've ridden down from Toronto as late as the last week of October.
You really need to layer tho ...that ride I went from 0 to 28 degrees C in an 8 hour period. Some gorgeous roads in Virginia etc

Wet Virginia weekend Oct 25th - suggestions for base

Up on the BRP will be a bit cooler than surrounding - as much as 5 degrees. Short daylight that time of year means being more aware of deer.....even in daylight the BRP is loaded....I saw one head poke up the other side of a stone wall ....so I stopped to photograph and realised there was a whole herd just on the other side.
Near dusk .....get off and walk :D

Skyline and BRP full of leaf peepers in the fall at least that has been my experience over the years. Best not on weekends. Very scenic and can get cold.

I'm also hoping to head down from Toronto area to Ironhorse for that same weekend - hopefully arriving there Sept 25th. I'll be taking backroads down from around Roanoke, VA, over a 7-10 day trip and also camping as much as possible. Then taking twisty backroads the whole way home.

For those coming from the northeast, I did up a few ride reports from my last two trips down to the Smoky Mtns with many of the best roads mapped out - to help plan your route: here and here.

The road conditions should be amazing. Not too hot, or cold - and depending on the roads you choose to ride, not much traffic either. Definitely have the rain gear. Heated gear and a throttle lock of some sort will make it much more comfortable as well. The weekday riding will be incredible and my past experiences have also been the same for weekend riding. A few years ago I also rode the entire lengths of the 219 (southbound) and then the full BRP and Skyline (northbound) and found them all amazing too. It might be better to ride them northbound, so the sun is always on your back and not in our eyes. No police presence, very light traffic and even with traffic, it was seldom difficult to pass and maintain some fun riding. Here is that ride report with different roads mapped out too. If you have the time, a trip over to Barber Museum might be in order.

If we are riding down the same days and want to hit some of the same roads, let me know!
Cheers.

Myself and two others on big sport touring bikes are riding down from Canada now on the same week as you and for about the same time - 3 days down, 2 days there and 3 days back. We'll be staying at the Dragons Rest Cabins while down there too. No more camping for us - proper beds everywhere we go.

If you have not yet sorted out your routes, some of these might be of some use to you. If you want any GPX files for your GPS, then PM me your email address and I would be happy to send them to you.

Day 2: https://goo.gl/maps/h5ri4 Bridgeport WV to Boone NC via 219, VA16, US421, US321 - 8.5hrs/625km

Day 3: https://goo.gl/maps/5fguX Boone NC to Dragons Rest Cabins via NC 80, 226A, TN143, NC197, BRP - 8.5hrs/500km

Day 4: https://goo.gl/maps/JDE6Z - Devils Triangle, Little River, Canada Rd Loop - 10hrs/650km

Day 5: https://goo.gl/maps/brQvA - Dragon 2x, Cherohala, N Georgia and Moonshiner Loop - 9hrs/600km

Day 6: https://goo.gl/maps/k83gt - Dragons Rest Cabins to Boone NC via NC 281, 276, BRP, NC 80, NC226A - 8.5hrs/480km

Day 7: https://goo.gl/maps/69GDr - Boone NC to Bridgeport, WV via NC 311, WV 250, Smoke Hole Road - 9hrs/650km

If your heading down to roanoke from the north. I would recommend VA 311 from White Sulfer Springs, WV.
Thanks for this - we are going to ride it now that you suggested it!

I went in July. The bears were being bad, but the deer were scarce even at dusk/dawn. Watch your smells in the campgrounds (food, toothpaste, candy etc.). I got warned by the Rangers more than once. I also agree that weekdays are best. The best part of the BRP is the southern third, so ride to the end or skip the middle if making up some time.
