How do I gauge the pad thickness to assess when new pads are required?
I've always removed the calipers.
I just replaced my fronts at 56,000 miles.
They had less than 2 millimeters left.
I figured the new set would last the reast of the bike's forseeable life.

The book says to replace them when worn so much the grooves cut into the pad disappear. The not riveted so will work as long as the are not worn down the the backing plate at any point.
