Just heard on the local news that Parkway Officials don't expect the BRP to open until the middle of May.

At this point there are at least 2,000 trees blocking the road in North Carolina.

It's been a rough winter here, up on the Parkway, hurricane force winds really tore things up. I've been up to the gate at Hwy 276 and can attest to the arboreal damage there.

I'll link the video as soon as it's posted.

Thanks for posting. I hope they get it cleaned up sooner than May.

I know my family in WV took a pounding also this winter.

Here's what the BRP looked like in the Jonas Ridge area on March 27th. (near Linville Falls)

Thank you very much for the info. I was thinking of heading up there this weekend and I had no idea. I guess I will try going somewhere south instead.

You can pick a nice route around the BRP.

We really need the tourist cash.

I'm wondering if that's why the .gov parkway website only lists one mile of the whole thing as being closed?
Maybe if you add up the trunk diameter of all the fallen trees it adds up to 5,280 ft. They hope you don't picking your way around them.

BRP Update

I went up Hwy 276 to the BRP yesterday.

It's open northbound, only to the Pisgah Inn. If you're in Waynesville (are you reading this Barnone?) It's a lovely ride up there for lunch. Also if you're coming up from Brevard it's a lovely ride, either way, they'll need your business during this closure.

The BRP was closed Southbound from 276. Not sure of the status beyond that point, although the official website fails to include this closure:

http://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

According to the link above, the section North of the Pisgah Inn North to Hwy 191 will remain closed until July.

The website lists a detour, and there are detour signs in my neighborhood. If you want an alternate detour (read more MC-oriented) send me a PM; it includes Avery's Creek Road, Pennsylvania Road, North and South Mills River Road and some others.

I got on the BRP @ NC 215 yesterday and it appeared that it was open in both directions.....but...

When I tried to head North to 276 I was only allowed to go as far as graveyard fields parking area.

Now all they have to do is get I-40 cleared and open and it'll make things a lot easier for me!!! Gonna be flying that way on the 20th and from there (Ashville) driving to Memphis and having to add an hour or so of travel to my trip really chaps my hide and all because they sweep a few little rocks off the road!!!! :biggrinjester:

Fewer closures

It looks like most of the Parkway is open in North Carolina. The section between Hwy 191 and Hwy 151 remains closed. That section is expected to have one open lane by July 1.

Also, Interstate 40 at the NC/TN border is expected to open some time early next week.

I'm sure this is not unwelcome news to all the 'Strommers heading down to the Iron Horse in a few weeks.

I rode it North of Blowing Rock last weekend as far as NC18...road was open but the shoulders are still littered with lots of limbs and clean up was is progress.

I didn't see any signs warning of closure beyond where I rode either.

So anyone know what the latest scoop is? It's past mid May. I been putting off my cross country trip to that area til it's fully open.

The Jonas Ridge section was opened up on May 14th so you should be good to go! :yesnod:

You may still have that one detour in the Asheville area though...
