Beginning Nov. 1, the Parkway will be closed again south of Asheville for on going repairs...why they decided to do it now during peak tourist/leaf season I can't tell you.

Here is the press release:

"The Blue Ridge Parkway plans to close the section of parkway again between Pine Mountain Tunnel at Milepost 399 and N.C. 151 at Milepost 405, about 25 miles southwest of Asheville.

The closure will begin at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1, and will require a complete closure to all public traffic. Due to dangerous conditions that now exist in the work zone, foot, bicycle and other traffic will remain strictly prohibited until the area is reopened. Both lanes are estimated to be open for traffic by early spring 2011.

When traveling south on the parkway, the signed detour will follow N.C. 191/Brevard Road to N.C. 280, interconnecting to U.S. 276 in Brevard and back to the Parkway, just south of the Pisgah Inn. The detour will be taken in the opposite direction when traveling north."

Hwy 151 up from Candler is the most funnnest workaround.

Thanks for the update.

One of my favorite roads as well. Took about 25 minutes to reach the top on Sunday...the leaf peepers were among us and moving slow. I think they saw a turkey and had to stop and take pictures. Excruciating, but they'll be gone soon enough.

Went up for the sunrise tuesday morning. No traffic up or down. Did run into some photogs at Pounding Mill. It was a beautiful, blustery sunrise. I'm planning a thread.......................

I'm glad I did my trip down Skyline Dr. & the BRP last week. I would have been very upset if it had been closed when I arrived.

That would have been a bummer if it were closed when you came through. That section is one of my favorites and one of the most visited in this area. Glad you got to cruise through with no problems. The work around, although not terrible, is just a pain and not very scenic except for 276 or 215.

Back in the Spring when it was still closed from the winter storms I went S/B from 191 for about six miles to the closure and had the place to myself.

It was quite pleasant, if not a drive through - if you know what I mean.

I went back and forth a couple of times with nary a care in the world - if you know what I mean.

I could ride my own ride as it were - if you know what I mean.

This just after a stern but friendly warning from a Park Ranger on the Commuter Section - if you know what I mean.
