So, the instrument cluster/signal lamp fuse of my K5 650 blew today. :(

I had been out riding in the rain on the highway for about 15 minutes before pulling off to check out a dirt road for possible future exploration...

As I was going down a rocky downhill I noticed the gauges were all blank and the neutral indicator was not lighting up... wtf?

I pulled the seat and had a look... no signs of mice or anything weird going on under there... just the blown 15A fuse. I replaced it with the spare and it was fine all the way home (but the rain had stopped).

It's a little unnerving because I've got a long trip planned for August and I've never had any problems like this.

I have the bike set up with fairly typical electrical farkles... Suz heated grips, Stebel horn, Powerlet outlet, Gerbings heated gloves but only the heated grips were in use at the time. Are they on the same circuit as the gauges/signal lights?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Martin

If it hasn't happened again I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just to be sure, set the bike up the way it was when the fuse blew and give the bike a good soak with a hose. If it happens again you'll know for sure, if not, no worries. Might be wise to pack some spare fuses just for peace of mind.

OEM heated grips are run off the signals fuse.

I had the same problem last year. On my bike it was a short in the rear signal wires. The wire sheathing had worn through where the wires run past the frame going to the back of the bike. Might be worth a look.

An update... 8 years later... the same fuse blew. The bike is a 2005 Wee with over 80,000 km on it.

I'm not too worried at this point... I've got no trips planned and the bike does still run and the headlights work without that fuse. When I pull the cowling to replace my fork seals next month I'll have a look for chafed wires.

I know some people have found a mis-routed harness on early Wees but I think I checked for that the last time. Any other known trouble spots?
