I know this subject is discussed now and then here but I need to find out the latest. What are you folks using for bike to bike comm? CB, FRS,...etc. and what units are you using, brand, model, etc. Thanks.
Personally, I went with a CB since most of the MTF guys have them and I ride with them as much as possible. FRS is cheaper and more simple, but the CB route worked out well for me.
I have a MIT-100 from Sierra Motorcycle Electronics and it integrates my CB, Sat Radio, and cellphone (rarely use this feature). I also use a Firestik NGP antenna and my system is all shoved in a tankbag. I really enjoy riding with comm equipment. It makes the ride more enjoyable and the safety factor is a big plus also. Just this weekend, my father-in-law and myself were tooling down a highway overtaking some slower cars when one started to merge toward him. I hit the PTT button and said "that car doesn't see you and he started moving left." I don't know if it saved his bacon or not, but my alerting him saved a few fractions of a second of time for him to take action.
My wife and I use Midland FRS radios because they have dual cable jacks. Then you can go to Fry Electronics and get helment head sets with push to talk buttons. They work fine as long as you do not set a privacy code. At over 200 mph the privacy code will screw up. You can talk untill you start moving and then the thing quits working. They also will operate on VOX, but I hate the VOX on them. Then my wife has a Scala Rider so she can answer her phone. I put a Pillion unit in my helment and it will work to talk to her at just over safe riding distance. The VOX actualy works good on it because it knows how to compensate for wind noise by its self. It is only good for 2 parties as per it is blue tooth and pairs to it's mate only. I think they have a improved model that will do more now.
I use a Starcom1 Advance unit that integrates the GPS, music, radio etc. The Starcom helmet arrangement I use has the stereo speakers that I've embedded into my Shoei RF1000 and a microphone I velcroed in as well. My radio is a Kenwood TK-3200LR so it is setup for FRS/GMRS frequencies. Unless you have access to the Kenwood programming software/hardware I would stick to the common FRS radios e.g. Motorola / Cobra. I rode with some folks this weekend who had these Motorola/Cobra radios and they worked well.

One of the pair didn't work correctly on DAY one at home in the USA - got it replaced- Day 9 of the trip the power cable shorted - proprietary cable - end of game your are ****ed.
So things I will avoid if ever I get communicators again - propriatary parts that can go bad and are not easyily replaceable -bad
VOX (PIA wind and shit make it go off - have to pull squelch down to make it stop - can't tell if it's your helmet system or the other one - get's frustrating-PTT would be better).
Battery options AAA/AA recharging sometimes - in foreign countries it's a PIA - adapters - chargers - just a lot of overhead that while nice it would be good to have backup power source/option.
When it worked it worked pretty well - but VOX wasn't that great of a feature overall. Full face helmets it should have worked much better. Maybe with a chin cover - but hot windy weather - not feasible
I sold my Goldwing and it had a CB, I used it all the time when riding with other Goldwing riders, now that I ride Dual Sport bikes with DS riders I just haven't had the need for bike to bike comunications. Who would have thought that.
