Bike purchase, listen and opinion

Hi all, Ive just put a holding deposit on a beautiful low km, blue 2012 vstrom.

Im very happy with it except not knowing the model very well I had some questions. I test rode it today and it rides very well.

But there is kind of a whine when revving it, might be induction. I took a video and am asking the Stromtroopers to have a listen and give an opinion.

Also, the clutch pick up point is right at the bar, literally let the clutch lever out off the bar at all and clutch is engaging, is this an adjustment thing or normal etc?

Anyway, please give this YouTube video a listen and let me know what you think.

sounds beautiful and the clutch is adjusted at the bars for small adjustments or down at the side case for larger adjustments.

They whine like that to say, "let's ride! Enough of this idling!"

Thanks. Never heard one before, just wanted to make sure before paying full price.

Super keen to collect it and get riding.

Couldn't say what that is... I had a 2014 Wee and it did not sound like that.
If you’re really concerned, have a dealership check it out first. It may cost you an hour of service time but peace of mind.

Additionally ; I don’t hear anything of concern

Yup, sounds just like my 2011.

Welcome to the club.

My '13 too. These bikes easily make as much noise from induction as they do from exhaust.

Yep that sounds normal to me agree with everyone else you'll love it wish I could've found a blue one!!... one thing that took me a while to get used to was chain whizzing sound as I've been on shaft drive bikes for about the last 5 years
Thanks all. I will post up a pic when I collect it.

The owner is big on detailing, and the bike shows it. Looks brand new.

Very happy with the blue, its a bit more expensive than I wanted but a year from now I wont care about that little bit extra.

Sounds like and looks like my 13
It sounds normal.

However more important is to make sure that the brake fluids (front and rear) have been changed regularly. The 2012 year (at least in NA) has a higher frequency of ABS issues than other years. Maybe caused by exhaust heat. Anyway frequent fluid changes are likely the best precaution against ABS issues. If there is no record or proof of any changes I would pass this one.

Hi, thanks for the response.

The seller is very meticulous, has service receipts etc.

I am sure the bike is well cared for.

When I go back to finalise the sale I will check them for Braka fluid changes.

Before the sale the seller got a service done and had all fluids changed.

Thanks for the advice.

6th gear on V-Stroms also seems to produce a distinctive whine. No idea why. Occasionally someone poses the theory that that whine seems to have a warning effect on deer, so stroms don't seem to have bad encounters with deer.

I hope it's true. I doubt it's true. But I've never hit a deer yet on the V-Strom either.

I hit one on mine a few months ago. Luckily we were both OK.

Hmm, I wonder if it works for Kangaroos.

Well I picked her up a few days back.

Very happy with it.

Here is the pic as promised.

Geez I enjoyed the 2 hour ride home. I did a test ride but it was only around the local streets which were 50km/h zones.

The ride back I got to experience it in traffic, on 80km/h roads, on 110km/h highway etc. Really enjoyed it.

I found the bike very balanced and easy to manage riding slowly coming to a stop, moving forward slowly in traffic etc.

Very comfortable. It has a Madstad screen on it in the highest position. When sitting back straight I can see over the top of it by a few inches. At speeds around 110-130ish I wasn't getting buffeting, maybe the slightest amount but wasn't bothersome.

One thing I will say is when I hit the freeway, my immediate impression as I hit 120-130 was I can't be going this fast, it just didn't seem right. I was passing cars, but there were still cars passing me. But it just didn't feel like 130! I was to the point I was wondering if the Speedo was accurate. But in reality I think it is the smoothness of the ride that makes it feel slower then you are actually going.

Suspension I found great, on my little VTR250 there is a bump in the road near my house that always launches me off the seat an inch or so, but on the Vstrom I cruised over it with a small jostle.

I can't say my riding experience is anything to go by, having only ridden a GS500f and VTR250 prior to this, but you can really pick up on the difference in quality.

One thing I noticed, I got off half way home, so about an hour in to the ride, and checked the oil sight window, and there was no oil showing. I did think the bike was sounding a little rattly, and once when I nailed the brakes hard, the gear lever went mushy, and no gear indicated on the dash, a few moments later and the gear lever selected gears and the gear indicator appeared on the dash again.

Oil was last changed 5000km ago and 12 months ago. Likely needs an oil change to resolve?

Anyway, I'm sure there will be many km's ahead of me on this, love it so far.

Planning to get Givi crash bars and top box, eventually panniers as well.
