HELP ME BREAK THE TIE OF INDECISION!!

I know I want the V Strom over the competition(even though it's the only one I have yet to try)(dealers won't let me)
But now I can't decide 1000 or 650.
Most of my rides will be short and solo buuuut...there will be two up and tours, with gear and from mile high and up..living in Denver.
There will be an occasional gravel, or hard pack etc.
whats to do? more bike, more possibilities? passenger comfort better on the big guy or not.
Help me with this one.
new black and blue 1000 steeds are at Apex in the Springs... is it worth 2 grand for bigger and better?
I want ALL your opinions. let me have it, for real, from those who really know. I'm a prior BMW,Duck,Guzzi,Triump and Norton from the 60's, now pushing 58. I'm dumping my R90/6 '76 for this wake up call.

thanks
David aka Boris

I second that. If a dealer won't let you test ride a bike, you shouldn't give him your money. Would you buy a car without driving it? Find another Suzuki shop, and let the first one know why they lost your business.

I don't think two-up/luggage is a consideration.
Both will do this. The 650 has adequate power.

Both bikes are basically the same in size and
"creature comfort" in respect to both rider
and passenger.

I still stand by the point of view that the only
reason to get a 1000 is if you want a 1 second
lower ET in the 1/4 mile. And of course, if
you just like it. It will probably boil down to
whether you are a power rider or a finesse
rider in the curves.

Both are fabulous. If a big trailie is your soup,
then I think it is pretty much impossible to be
dissapointed with either.

As far as $. This is more important to some than
others. $2,000 will buy a hell of a lot of cool
mods for a DL650. :)

Hmm

Go with the 1000... The weight difference between the two is not that great, and they ARE the same size. and the big DL has TORQUE... and plenty of Grunt for what ever you want to do… Wrong gear nooooo problem just twist the wrist...

I test rode both and found them both perfectly suited to my style of riding. The Vee simply has more torque, alot more. In the end I chose the Vee because I plan on doing alot of highway time and I found the Vee at 4K RPM's at 70 indicated was just plodding along but the Wee seemed to be working a little (but from what I read, its not really working at all). So it is probably more a personal preference rather than a performance issue. I don't think you can go wrong picking either one.

Well, I don't own either (yet :D ), but have ridden both. I liked the 650 better. More nimble, and seemed to be a more balanced bike. Plenty fast enough for me. Just seemed like a more fun bike.
It's all personal preference though, so all our opinions don't amount to much. :) :)

Boris,
The best solution to your problem as most folks already mentioned is to go ride them both. If the dealer is not willing to arrange a demo, find another dealer. The bottom line is, 1000 is a torque MONSTER while 650 has a bit smoother engine and a little bit better suited for off roading. I went with a 650 and couldn’t be happier!

I would say 650 all the way,it handles like a dream and it is lighter not much slower top speed cheaper to run insure etc etc,
but different strokes for different folks.

p.s. Get the Blue one (much faster and cooler)

"not much slower top speed" ??? huh?
my 650 will not do much more than 110 [uncorrected].. the 1000's will do 140mph ! that's not a rounding error
