which one would you be leaning at getting?

bike one:

silver, 2007 debadged completly OEM(no farkles), 7k miles, had to have the insturment cluster replaced so showing 0 miles currently
5k

bike two:

Blue, 2005 blue It has Staintune exhaust, Givi Crash bars, Givi rear rack and 45 liter top case, Kaoko throttle lock, heated grips, grip puppies, MRA windshield, aftermarket center stand, front fender extender, SW Motech removeable saddle bag supports and 20mm Army Surplus ammo cans with locks for the saddle bags 40k miles, 4k

i'm really leaning to the second one, the mileage doesn't scare me (should it?), and it's got pretty much all the farkles i'd want already on it.

seems like a no brainer, but i'm a noob. What do you guys think?

Go for the 05. Despite the extra miles, sounds like it was well loved and I'll bet it has been maintained. Somebody who put that much time and $ into a bike might even have kept a record of oil changes & work done. When well cared for these engines should last well over 100k miles.

Good point. the guy is real friendly to talk to, and knows what he's talking about. Apperantly he and his wife rode a pair of these from michigan to yellowstone, then glacier national park in 2008. :hurray:

I agree...I'd go for the 05. Pre-07's allow you to do some work yourself, like setting the idle and doing TBS. The mileage is not bad (I'm approaching 34,000 FWIW, bought it w/ 22,000). It's got tons of extra stuff. And insurance will be cheaper. And as mentioned, the p/o enjoyed the bike enough to rack up those miles...he most likely would've taken care of it.

The replacement of the 07's instrument cluster would concern me...it's not something that usually has problems and could be indicative of accident/damage repair.

Best of luck on whichever one you choose!

pretty much on it's 3rd valve inspection interval.....what's the big deal!?

go for the 05! It's the first year of the major update for the vstrom - pretty much the same as present ones aside from the dual plugs, abs, and other fiddly bits...

I think I will buck the trend and vote for the 07 on the condition that there is dealer paperwork tracking the true mileage. 1k dollars seems like a small difference for over 30k miles. Some of the farkles are meaningless on the 05 and you may find that you prefer different things than original owner. If the 07 is non-ABS then its not too big of deal for the model. I have a preference for dual spark plug heads on a 2 cylinder but it seems pretty minor on these bikes.

The farkles have value and cost quite a bit to purchase retail. Add the price of those on the 05 and see what it will cost new to install them on the 07. It really adds up.

To me a replacement instrument cluster with 0 miles is a red flag. Of course it is critical to see the maintenance records on the 05. If none are available; I'd walk away.

There is always another bike out there. These two are absolutely not your only option. Take your time and get exactly the bike you want for the price you want to pay.

I paid $5000 for a stock low mile 650 '07 2 years ago. I'd pass on the '07 with '0' miles. Something's not right there.

Agreed -- whatever damaged the instrument cluster was either a severe accident that probably damaged a lot of other stuff besides or, uh, I dunno -- precisely targeted lightning bolt from an angry Zeus? Vengeful ex? Where's the old instrument panel? And "debadged" smells a lot like "repainted".

The point is, there's obviously a story here you're not getting. Dealer paperwork is easy to fake -- how the hell would you know if it's true? Besides, they're asking way too much for a damaged bike.

The farkled 05 is obviously the better choice. The mileage is of little to no concern.

As far as maintenance records, I don't place much stock in them. Again, these are nice to have but very easy to fake. Definitely not a deal-breaker. I'd much rather rely on my own assessment of the bike's condition (I suppose this varies if you're not all that mechanically knowledgeable).

And let's face it -- these are pretty tough bikes, and there are no models earlier than 2002. Short of crashing, there's not a whole helluva lot that can go wrong even if they're neglected.

Wear items like chains and tires are obvious and can work in your favor as bargaining chips. Same with valve checks -- if the owner doesn't know when they were checked or you don't quite trust the records, it's just another way to keep the price down.

If the thing runs OK and oil is fairly clean, it's not worth fussing so much about the blinker fluid records or the seat fart logs.

thanks Brian. This will be the first bike i don't have to "bring back to life" , but the 4th bike I've owned. i consider myself reasonably mechanically inclined. I've not got a lot of experience with chains, but other than that, i believe i can tell if it's running right or not. gonna go look at it tonight. I'll take the camera, and if there is anything I'm unsure about, I'll post a pic or two up here so you guys can bestow your knowledge onto the situation.
(glad at least one guy from the GSR gets it, some of them seem to think buying a 2 decade newer bike is somehow a downgrade)

thanks everyone else, too! I'm definitely more interested in the farkled one, because i know my wife and I'll have to justify every farkle i wanna put on there right now. :frown: I taught her too much about bikes :cryin:

Not necesarily true. I have known guys that have had a speedo/odomoteter go out with just a few thousand miles. My dads harley went out just 5k form new. No accident to speak of. I aint saying thats the case in this unit but I wouldnt roll out my, "jump to conclusions" mat quite yet. (you will have needed to see the movie, "Office Space" to get that reference)

I odnt think either bke is much of a deal. I bought my used 07 about a month ago. It has the ABS option, 9500 miles, suzuki heated grips, suzuki centerstand, power outlet, factory handguards, never down, not a scratch on it, new tires with less than 800 miles, registration good for another year.....I paid 4900 for it. Keep in mind that was just a month ago.

True -- maybe that was covered under "lightning bolt from an angry Zeus." I'm just saying that you'll want to be extra-thorough on the rest of the inspection when there's the potential that something doesn't add up, especially when they're asking premium money.

Oh hey, how ya doin'? I didn't notice your username until now! Howdy!

The V-Strom does seem to be popular amongst those of us with palates refined by multiple bikes. You don't want to know what I paid for my Vee with all the farkles...

Also, I don't think you've said whether you're looking at Wees or Vees.

Theres not alot around here for sale either but I placed a wanted add on this site and 2 days later had a message from another stromtrooper that was 20 minutes from my house. The bike was in my garage the next day. However, there was an 06 with farkles for 3500 the other day.....In any case, I wouldnt pay more just becasue selection at the time was low becasue if you ever go to sell it no one else is going to do the same.

Well, went and looked at the bike. found out that brad, the soon to be PO is a member over at advrider, but not here, (hopefully i can convert him!) he's also got a 2005 vee that he still rides.

he was really knowledgeable about the bike, had all the service records, too. Bike was scratch free except a small scuff on the left crash bar. ran awesome, none of the work looked poorly done, nor were there any fluids leaking or residue on it. clutch felt great, motor was not chattery at all once it warmed up (had a little chatter for about 30 seconds when it first started cold)

ran it through everything but 6th (no highways close) shifted real smooth, brakes felt great, too. has brand new tourances on it, valves ajusted 7k miles ago, and apperantly they checked the throttle balance at that time as well.

all in all, i was very pleased with the bike. i was a little concerned about the staintune, but it's pretty mild. does add a nice grunt to the bike, but not obnoxious.

hopefully this girl will be in my garage by friday!:hurray:

well, it's not that the selection is low, it's that everyone is trying to sell their used bike for damn near new bike prices :green_lol: Saw an 07 with 7k miles on it for 6999 .. can buy a brand new non abs for 6500...
