Wow, spring if finally around the corner, hopefully, and I am once again frequenting this forum!

Anyway, I've been wondering about something since last year. My bike is a 2009 650 and has the original battery. Last year I was wondering about the battery. I charge it over the winter once a month in the basement until it gets installed on the bike. No different this year as my routine is regular. I remember when the bike was new, and it was cold, it would start good and stay on the high idle for a little bit while the engine warmed up enough. Late last year, and the first start this year, it starts but the high idle didn't kick in. Went for a ride with the wife a couple days ago, highway riding around 40 minutes each way. After stopping the first time, for around 30 minutes, the engine was once again measuring no bars on the temp guage and when started went right to the high idle like it's supposed to. I went for a small ride yesterday and when first starting it no high idle. It started fine however.

Has anyone else here has this symptom and had to replace the battey soon thereafter? I was also wondering if constantly running the bike this way if the stator is working too hard to "recharge" the battery, hence early stator problems. I have done the load test(s) with a volt meter and the battery seems fine.

Just a question as I've read numerous battery postings and don't mean to start another. I haven't found anything here to suggest this particular symptom is all...:beatnik:

Whether the engine goes to fast idle when cold has little to do with the battery. It's nearly all about the FI sensors. A low battery can affect sensor readings but a battery strong enough to start the engine shouldn't cause a sensor problem.

Thanks for the feedback! I will try and keep the voltmeter with me on the next couple small trips just to see what happens at different intervals. It might be interesting to see the results. At least I shouldn't be stranded anywhere in the near future...:beatnik:

Yup, time for a new battery. Went for a short ride this morning but beforehand checked the voltage. 12.55 standing, 11.3-.4 with ignition on, dropped immediately to 9.03 or so when starting the engine (although it did start ok), 14.3-4 engine running at idle or above. Rode for 20-25 minutes highway miles, came home and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. 13.5 or so (slowly dropping) standing, 11.3-.4 with ignition on, dropped again to just over 9 volts when starting the engine (although it started immediately since the engine was warmed up), 14.3-.4 engine running at idle or above.

Seems everything I've read about these batteries is consistent with my original battery going bad. Guess it's a good time of year to replace it! I wonder how much stress the stator has on it when starting at this low of a voltage? Suppose it doesn't matter since I'll be ordering a new one anyway.

Thanks Grey, appreciate the feedback and your constant "professional" knowledge on this forum!
