I have a new-to-me 2006 DL1K with about 18k miles which replaced my 1995 DR650. I have ridden it for about two weeks. Last week I added 2 wires for the battery charger and heated gloves to the battery terminals for a last minute camping trip in the cool Minnesota fall, as a just in cased I need some heat a couple hundred miles from home. I replaced the existing battery bolts with longer ones that vibrated loose on Monday. I was stranded only a mile or two from home, got it charged up from a good samaritan that saw me in my AeroStitch suit and I was on my way. Meanwhile my spouse had purchased a new battery in the event the one in the bike was toast. I changed out the old for the new and lo and behold, I filled up today (Wednesday) and attempted to start it and the new battery was dead. I checked the connections and all were tight. I've searched the forums and haven't been able to narrow down what else I might have fried to prevent the new battery from keeping a charge.
Any educated guesses? I am a far cry from a shade tree mechanic, but I know many. I'd just like to know where start looking.:confused:

Just for clarification.

You started the bike normally and rode to a gas station. You stopped the bike and filled it with fuel then the bike would not restart.

Is that correct?

Were there lights on the dash and did the bike try to start or was it totally dead?

I'm not getting why you replaced the battery bolts or why their vibrating loose would require a good samaritan to charge it up for you, but I do know that some new lead/acid batteries like to be put on a full charge before you use them as opposed to AGM batteries which can sit for months on the store shelf and retain their charge. If your new equipment is wired directly to the battery, is there a possibility that you are leaving it on all the time, hence draining the battery? I am somewhat confused.

Battery not keeping a charge

Thank you K1W1 and MikeinLA for your assistance. I'll try to claify my problem. Yesterday I started the bike normally after work and stopped 20 miles later to refuel on my way home. The lights were on but the clock reset to 1:00 when I attempted to re-start after fueling, and all I got was the click-click-click from the starter. So it was not entirely dead, but close. The reason I replaced the battery bolts was to accommodate the extra electrical leads. I knew this was not the best option and I have plans now to install an auxiliary fuse block. Nothing was left on that could drain the battery. I did not charge the new battery prior to installing it, but rode about 100 miles with several stops and starts with out incident. I believe there is a problem with the charging system. Is there anything that you two know if that typically fails in the charging system? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
Update 10/01: I tested the battery with a volt meter and it IS NOT charging from the bike. I read everything I could find and it points to a bad R/R (regulator/rectifier). I just need to find an Ohm tester next and I think I'll have this problem licked. Hopefully it won't be the stator.
