I am trying to decide between a Bandit 1200 and a V-Strom 650/1000. Money is an issue that is why I am considering the Bandit. Any one here ever owned or ridden a Bandit and can give me a comparison of the two. I plan on doing a six month tour and then a trip to Alaska three years from now.

Thanks!

It's a personal choice...kinda like which do you prefer...Blondes or Brunettes?

Seeing as this is a V-Strom Forum...you'll probably be told a V-Strom is better...and the exact opposite if you ask on a Bandit Forum.

My advice, ride both if you can and make your own decision.

I'm just sayin...
BTD.

What's a Bama guy doing in So. Brazil??

About the V-Strom/Bandit question, I have no idea what you'd like better but a Bandit 1200 is kinda like a first generation FZ1 like I used to ride. Here's my review of a time I rode my FZ1, a DL1000 and DL650 back to back to back.

Good luck with your bike decision.
Thanks for posting that review! It amazes me how many people prefer the 650 to the 1000.

I am sold on the V-Strom, now I have to decide between the 650 and the 1000. :(

I think that I will will take either one that fits my budget and is a good deal. I think that I would like the 1k better though.

I will not be buying until May of 2009, so I have time to look and ponder.

My current bike is an XT600 and vibrates too much but does fine for me here in Brazil with it's off road capabilities. They are super dependable and tough but not very comfortable. I have done trips to Argentina, Uruguay and other parts of Brazil with it.

BTW, I am a Baptist Missionary, that is how I ended up in Brazil. I plan on visiting our supporting churches by motorcycle, since, my wife can not travel with me because of a bad back. Why not mix pleasure with bussiness, right? :)

I owned a 1997 B12 concurrently with the my 03 Vee for 6 months, and the Bandit's big advantage was that awesome engine. I did some Holeshot stuff and it dyno'd at 110 hp and 80 ft/lb torque. My Vee is 86 hp and 64 ft/lb torque by the same dyno. I kept the Vee because it is a much better and versatile overall bike.

From a chassis, handling and braking standpoint, the Vee is much more refined. Gas Mileage was 44 mpg for the Bandit, I get around 48-49 avg with the Vee. Once I dialed in the carbs, the Bandit was smooth as silk (except for the high speed tingling that Bandits are known for) and no Vee will ever be that smooth and flexible at ANY rpm.

The Bandit was a good bit smaller in size (I'm 6'11" tall) so the Vee gives me more room to spread out on.

But gotta love that B12 engine!

I would get another B12 and may do that at some point, but found a 1980 Yamaha XS1100SG Special that just had to find a way into my garage and bought it back in April. What a cool bike from the standpoint of how it brought in the age of the "superbike with refinement" almost 30 years ago. It gets a lot of questions and "I remember when..." remarks where ever I ride it.

El Bandido

I loved my '03 Babdit 1200S purchased new in '05 as a leftover model. Rode it from WNY to Wyoming and back in '06. What I liked about it was the horsepower and torque and the fact that is was a piece of cake to wrench on. I traded it on an '07 DL650 because I wanted a bike with better ergos and much better fuel mileage. I'd own them both if I could afford it. The good news is that El Bandido is still in the family as my youngest stepson bought it from the dealer after I got my Strom. If you can't afford to own both bikes may I suggest you go with the DL1000 to get the comfy ergos and a goodly amount of power if not quite the fuel mileage of the 650.
