Any riders familiar with northeastern NC have suggestions for interesting roads to include in a ride through that area? Paved or unpaved. I'm working up a route out through the northern counties and then down the outer banks. I could be adventurous on my own, but thought I'd at least share some of the planning fun with other riders, if the not the riding fun too.

US158 looks like an obvious route to start with, but I'm sure there are more interesting back roads that can be worked in for variety.

Thx in advance.

There are a few places to see, but not a boatload. As you are passing through Rocky Mounty, stop by TwinCounty Cycle, a Suzuki dealership, and say hi to Lance Cherry, the owner. One of the nicest people I have ever met in my life and also one of the best riders. Back in the day, a hell of a Motocross racer. Also raced Harley's on the flat tracks, to include Daytona.

Just east of Rocky Mount, is a small town called Tarboro. Has a nice historic district on the east side of main st. Calvary Episcopal Church is old and beautiful, looks much older, with a cemetery full of interesting folks, to include confederate generals.

From there, you can 64 East to 13 South and head down to East Carolina and Greenville. Beautiful old campus, good places to eat nearby. Head back up 13, past 64, to Route 17 North, over to Edenton. Edenton has the largest stand of 18th century homes anywhere - more than Williamsburg, VA - and they are not reproductions but the originals that people stil live in. Beautiful setting, right on the water, where there was a great civil war naval battle at the intersection of the Chowan River and the Albemarle sound.

You could then either jump back down to 64 and head east to Manteo and Nags Head or take 17 north to 158 in Elizabeth City and take over to Barco and down to Point Harbor and into Kitty Hawk. Enjoy.

Back road suggestions

Check out this website. It may help you get lost in enjoyment one weekend. :)

I know there are quite a few roads around Edenton that have some nice scenery and some history. Caratoke Hwy is a good one, and you can't go wrong w/ Hwy 12. Try linking some between VA an NC as well.

You will have to hunt really hard to find a stretch of road in eastern NC that isn't paved that is more than a mile long. But there are a few good rides here. Most of the time I head down the interstate west and ride in the mountains. But one of my favorites is to go east on 64 to Kitty Hawk and down the outer banks. Take the ferry over to Ocracoke and spend the night. Lots of B and B's or hotels. Several good restaurants. Get up in the morning and take the first ferry to Cedar Island. Then got to Beaufort and head back north on the back roads. I just set my GPS to avoid highways and let it pick the route.
