[Reposted because my original title left it languishing in obscurity. I know there are more geeks on here who will want to see this!]

I just came across this amazing touchscreen multifunction device someone built for their scooter. He started out just wanting to make a voltmeter, but kinda went crazy and ended up with quite the moto computer. Features include:

  • Battery voltage indicator
  • Time and date
  • Temperature
  • Lean angle gauge with resettable max L-R indicators
  • Current speed
  • Resettable max speed indicator
  • Odometer
  • 2 resettable trip meters
  • Latitude and longitude readouts
  • Compass heading readout
  • GSM/GPRS quad-band cellular module
And if someone attempts to "borrow" his scooter without permission, he'll get a text telling him where it is, how fast it's going, and in what direction. He can also send a text from another phone and the device will reply with information like position, speed, heading, time and date.

Full description, schematics, program code etc here: http://www.janspace.com/b2evolution/arduino.php/2010/06/26/scooterputer

I've been wanting to build something similar, and have been wondering what someone would pay for one...

wow, wonder what that ran price wise
The link in the article for the screen suggested that the touch screen itself was over $150. Plus all the electronics, (half a dozen adapter/sensor boards and the original arduino board) and the total materials cost is a few hundred dollars.

Probably not a profitable business at small scales. Although I am staring a project of my own which will give me a small portion of the capability of that device.

yeah something with a small strip lcd similar to that other thermo/volt meter used on the boards but with an el backlight, if had the ability and money i'd just have the temp, volts, the accelerometer to measure accel/deccel(and how many g's) and the lean angle function and of course water resistant/proof

oh and i guess a clock so that people stuck with bikes that dont have clocks find more utility in it lol

Very cool indeed but also seems kind of bulky - appears that there is stuff under the seat as well? It is interesting though to see what you could do with the Arduino stuff. MAybe something without the touchscreen and all the extras would be cool. Temp, ice risk, voltage, etc - maybe all just on a continuous display.

Hmmmmm ...

The sensors and some other bits are in the "fairing" of his scooter, which would probably be the best place for them on a strom too -- I don't imagine you would get accurate temperature readings under the seat.

The Arduino seems to be taking over the world of DIY electronics; there are dozens of add-on components for it and hundreds of possible uses. Someone even built an Arduino-based webserver.

Funny part is a Iphone / Ipod touch can do all those things, just need someone to write the program :0)

True, but it would probably be quite slow to react, due to the software overhead.
