Ok, just finished installing the Audiovox CCS-100 cruise control on my Wee-Strom using pictures and instruction from Roy Bertalotto. I wound up building my own aux vacuum canister and using a slightly different setup for connecting the throttle linkage. If anyone is interested in seeing my installation, here are some pictures I took.

I bought a 2006 DL 650 and really wanted a cruise control. I used Roy Bertalotto's excellent instructions. They were invaluable for hooking everything up quickly. When I ordered my CSS 100 Audiovox Cruise Control, I also ordered their auxilary vaccum cannister as recommended by Roy...and Audiovox. The cruise control arrived without the canister (on Backorder), so I went ahead and installed it without the vaccum canister. I seemed to have no problems operating without the aux vaccum canister on a 300 mile jaunt up into the Tryon, NC area. My throttle linkage connection was done with the bead chain and a cotter pin. This is a really simple way of attaching to the linkage and maintains a very low linkage profile with no binding or inflexibility. I inspected it after the 300 mile trip which included extensive use of the cruise control and it looks as secure as it did when I installed it.

Tip: The wire taps included with the cruise control kit may fail to tap into the various wires, so make sure you test each tap you make for continuity into the tapped wire. Any digital multimeter will work....you can get cheap ones at radioshack. By checking to make sure each tap did in fact successfully bite into the copper of the tapped wire, you will save yourself lots of trouble. I checked each tap during my installation, and the cruise control worked the very first time I tested it.

Tip: When drilling into the throttle linkage, use the smallest drill bit you can find to drill a pilot hole. It will dance around less than a larger bit and lessen the chance of buggering up things. Once you get the pilot hole drilled, work up to a larger bit for the final hole size you want.

Wiring with a relay for brake & clutch disengagement

Journeyman work for sure, like the throttle linkage solution. BTW, anyone wanting the diagram & instructions for putting in a relay to control brake and clutch disengagement email me. Apparently on some installs the clutch pull would not shut off cc quickly or at all and installing LED tail lights will confuse cc because of no return from ground..LED are diodes and current goes in only one direction. Thanks Roy, just trying to improve on what already is a great design. Sometime having lots of different hobbies does come in handy. Sure am gland that I was not the first person who tried to install this thing.

Couple of questions.

1. I bought the JC vacuum bottle. it is marked MAN and AMP. Which one goes where or does it matter?

2. Is there any good reason not to mount the vacuum bottle under the gas tank bracket? It just seems like the perfect place.

3. Will you come over to my house and help me sort out what bolt/connector/etc... goes where when I get ready to put it back together. :lol: :shock:

Just run your vacuum tube from the TBs to one port or the other and start up the bike. If you feel a suction coming from the unused port on the canister you've got it hooked up right and can then run a tube from it to the cruise control body. Otherwise, just reverse it if you feel no vacuum and you're good to go.

LED ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As stated above, the unit will not work with LEDs in the brake system. Racked my brain for a few days on this until I remembered others having problems when a BACK-OFF or other brakelight enhancer was installed. I am basically sub-novice when it comes to electronics and mechanics so I don't have the faintest reasoning why this is so (I need one of those Electronics for Degenerates books or something).

Hey folks. After reading this thread and a couple others, Audiovox sounds like a great option for affordable cruise, and it's something I'd love to have. Unfortunately, the catch is that I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to wiring. So, given that info, what are the chances that your wisdom and instructions are detailed and thorough enough for a complete n00b like me to follow without causing any costly damage? If it takes you 4-5 hours, it'll take me 8, and I really don't want to put all that time in only to find my installation doesn't work.

Help? Thoughts? Suggestions? Recommendations?

However, a much less stressful option for me is if one of you is near Southeast Michigan and feels up to installing it for me for less $ than a shop would. If you're interested, let's haggle.

FYI, I haven't ordered anything yet (other than one of those crappy little NEP locks that I don't plan to use), but Spring is here!

L*F*A, nobody's a bigger "nOOb" than yours trully and I managed to get it up and working. It did take me the better part of a day, but it's worth it for its performance and the money you'll save doing it yourself. Just check out the other posts on the subject, and get the detailed instructions as offered from those who've done it and went to the trouble to photograph/record it. There's some real talent out there who've done the hard part for us - figuring it all out!

That's definitely encouraging. Now I'll just need to find the time. ;) But I think I'm game assuming I can gather all these wonderful instructions I've heard about. Found some nice photos (http://home.comcast.net/~agolder/index.htm), but Roy's Strom/instructions page is MIA. If anyone can help me out on this, please post a link or send it straight to me at [email protected].

Wonderful. Got the instructions. Thanks guys.

Another thought... is the control box waterproof? I try to ride all year as long as I don't have any gimpy body parts. (I apolgize if that's addressed in the instructions, but I haven't read them yet.)

I'll let you all know if I have any exciting developments to share.

Control box is not waterproof. Some folks have taken it apart and sealed it with silicone. I haven't done that to mine and I've ridden in many rain storms with no ill effect.
But before I head to Alaska, I plan on sealing it.

Audiovox Cruise

Just curious. I've put these cruise controls on st1100's, st1300's Valkyries and Vstrom 1000's. I've never hooked one up to the tach for RPM sensing. I always use the coil lead with dip switches set for 8k PPM and Sensitivity to medium. Did you connect to the tach or the coil lead?
