I've heard several times about an awesome motorcycle road in Az. and now trying to remember what road it is. It was being compared to the Tail of the Dragon.... I'm looking at an Az map ....is it hwy 191 from Round Rock to hwy 264? If not do you know what it is?

Next question, hwy 264 from the intersection of 191 heading west...is that a good road to ride? How warm would it be the first week of June?

Thanks in advance!

my research has led be to believe that Devils Hwy, 1800 turns in 90 miles is Rt 191 south from Alpine

good luck getting info, either the locals out there are trying to keep it secret, or they never ride much. I believe the months that are sketchy is late November thru March

subscribed, I'm planning a 50CC and riding the Devils Hwy on the return trip, probably in October

There are a number of great roads in Arizona. The most prominent is most likely the Devil's Highway, as RandyO pointed out, and it is Arizona Highway 666.

For Arizona road information go to http://www.seizethejourney.com/ Use the EMail link at the bottom of the page to EMail AGirl and ask her. Include in the message that I said to write her and ask and you'll get an answer. She probably knows every road in Arizona and has probably ridden them all more than once.

Kinda confusing when it's referred to by so many names.
Devils Hwy - Coronado Trail - Hwy 666 - Hwy 191
Is this it?

That would be it...... wonderful ride. Best to plan a ride from Clifton to Alpine, that way you can find a gear and just roll the throttle threw the many, many....did I say many, turns :)

That would be around Ganado, AZ to the N. Mexico border. Very pretty country side. If you turn north towards Window Rock and up to Wheatfields, Tsaile.... then turn at Tsaile towards Chinle.... you are right by Canyon De Chelly. The weather is nice around then. Would be tempted to meet up with you Ken.

Wow.....glad you guys replied, I was way off, I was looking at the 191 nearer to Utah. Ok, so now I've got to rethink and see if it is still doable. The plan is ride there the first full week of June 6 - 12.

If you are close by you're welcome to come along! I'll post more as I get more info.

Thanks for the replies!!!!

Ozart, thanks for the map!

I did that ride a few years back on my concours.

Here's a wonderful sign you're greated with when you start the fun.

I actually got sick of turning after awhile. I longed for a straight section where I could rest. I think they only stock the "curves" signs up to "25 miles", because it was alot longer than 25 miles of curves.

Definitely drive south to north, going up hill.
Careful in the spring. Winter sanding of roads for snow/ice and spring rains can make for some sandy/slippery roads. If you're looking to really tear up the corners then oct/nov is perfect.

June wouldn't be too bad on the 191. Kind of hot getting to the south end if you go through phoenix or tucson. June's temperatures in the lower elevations will be in the 100's. Nights are cooler though. It'll be nice and cool once you get north of Clifton.

When I did my ride in July, I left Tucson at night when it was cooler and got a hotel in Safford and started early the next day in cooler temperatures. I rode from Safford up the 191 and then west to Pinetop. 200 miles, and I was pooped.

The highway used to be Arizona 666, but was renamed to the 191. Hence, devils highway. Not to be confused with the other Devils Highway (El Caminiones Del Diablo) in southwestern arizona that's a dirt road that snakes along the US/Mex border.

Here are a couple of links gps "trails" of 191 on ridewithgps.com if you're using a GPS...
Just the 191
The 191 with a loop into New Mexico

The loop would be cool too. I've driven highway 78 that's just east of 191, and that's another beautiful ride. If I had to choose though, 191 would be the winner.

Good info Buster, the way it's planned right now, we will be riding it both ways, going south first then back north!

We have been talking about that road for a couple of years now. Hope to make it late summer or early fall.

The wife and I are headed to Phoenix from Durango in late March to catch a Giants game. If the weather plays nice, we're takin the bikes. We will probably ride through Four Corners, Tuba City, Flag; then slab it to Phonix. We are thinking of coming back through Show Low, Holbrook; then either up through Ganado and Chinle if we have time, or slab it to Gallup if we are running out of time. The road from Chinle past Canyon De Chelly looks great, but I think there is too much snow in the range between Lukachukai and Shiprock this early in the year, so probably stay on 191 to 160.

Any ideas on how those roads are in early Spring, and if there are any better roads. We try to stay off the slab whenever possible, but don't want to get caught up in icy or sanded roads. Plus it will be a short trip, so not too much time to lolligag.

Any experienced advice will help. Thx

I rode the 191 this past June...for the first time ever...in the dark due to some poor planning. NOT recommended. It took me nearly 3 hours to go the 90 frightening miles to Morenci. And it was near the end of a 650 mile day. I was never so happy to hop on the freeway. LOL

Some of the thought processes I had that day (should have had better thought processes PRIOR to riding it in the dark, but..that's another story...LOL):

"Ok, turn your head."
"Ok, turning my head...can't see a flipping thing. Oh...there! I think that might be a partial white line."
"OK, lean....."
"Aw crap, bunny!"
"Ok, who cares. The bunny is dead if he gets in my way at this point."
"Really wish they had some street lights up here."

LOL It was sooooo dark up there, which sounds really obvious, but..really. It was dark.

Don't do that. :D

With that said, I really want to get back there for a daytime jaunt.

Seein's how I'm a newbie and all, I won't say much. Except,

This is the best MC road in the world. I mean THE BEST. From Alpine to Morencini is just stunning, hardly matters which way you go. I ride it at least once a year. Did I mention 9000'? The campground (free) at Hannigan Meadows is 9003', a great place to stay if it's not snowing (it was last year in early September) and you can get lunch at the historic Inn next door. Say hello to Billy....

That deal in North Carolina is just another dead reptile, really!

Riding 191 will have to happen on another ride for me. The group ride this question was originally posted for won't be able to go that far south. We will make it as far as Sedona - time constraints, work, and all that...

But thanks for all the input, I hope to get down on a solo ride this summer and ride 191.
