I went to calsportbike.com to look at pipercross air filters, clicked on the Online Store button and saw an ad for the HealTech Electronics Suzuki OBD tool for $219.99.

http://www.calsportbike.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?cart_id=3162850.3663&pid=2045&count=1

A lot cheaper than the factory tool, which they don't sell to the public anyway. I emailed them to make sure it could be used to synchronize throttle bodies on new bikes and this is the reply I got:

Yes, that's correct.

Before you start to sync the throttle bodies, you need to lock the ISC
valve.
This can be done by our OBD Tool. Select the "Active Test" tab and turn the
"ISC air volume control" to ON.
(Note that the engine must be running and the coolant temp should be between
70C and 105C).

After the sync, it is recommended to stop the engine and then push the "ISC
learned value reset" button. Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 mins
and the ECM will learn the correct ISC value.

Kind Regards,
/Norbert

As you can see, my reply came from HealTech Electronics. Looks like they also make SpeedoHealers.

This may be something I'll have to invest in.

Now that's interesting. It could be fun to play with.

Indeed, this is truly interesting.

I got one. Right now, it can't access the ECM to lock the ISC. Healtech knows about it so I'm expecting a software upgrade is in the works.

Did they give you any kind of timeframe on the required software patch?
I'm not crazy enough to ask for a software update timeframe. I used to be a programmer before I retired. When it works, I'll post an update.

Thanks for being the guinea pig. I was thinking about this just this weekend when I got an FI code on my gixxer at a track day. Luckily it was intermittant and went away. I will probably get one too. Please keep us posted on the update.

wa wa wait a minute. Can't access the ECM? Isn't that it's intended function?

Mine will be here Wednesday... Now I'm disappointed.

Being a software guy and managing a software test team for years how could the software's main function not work before releasing the software?

Oh well, hopefully they will be quick about it.

They sent me a Beta update today. It now allows locking the ISC at 58 steps once the temps reach 80C but generates the unsupported ECM function message when trying to turn it off or re-set the ISC value. The Off button does unlock the ISC valve despite the message and the factory method of putting the bike in dealer mode, turning the ignition on, turning it off for at least five seconds then taking it out of dealer mode still works. That makes the beta software workable but it can be a lot better and I'm sure it will be.

I'm going to reserve most of my questions and input until mine arrives and I get a chance to put it on the bike. I don't see the tank being put on the bike for at least a week or so.

I'm confused a bit. So you plug it in, let it get to temp and it will lock the ISC valve which will allow you to do the sync. When you go to turn the ISC lock off it errors out. However, it does unlock the ISC Valve. I'm good until that part. The rest has me wondering. Does this software put the bike in Dealer mode? Or are you flipping the switch or jumping it?

also:
I inquired with them about linux support. They are not planning on porting the program. However, they did send me a link to the software (not the beta) to play with. I was able to get it to run under Wine on EEE Ubuntu with no problems. Whether or not it will interface with the USB port won't be known until it arrives. If they didn't rely on windows USB drivers and it shows up as a tty device it should just work. If not I'll explore more or just load up a window XP boot SD/Flash drive to use with it.

The beta software lets you turn on the ISC air volume control which evens the air volume in the two cylinders and locks the ISC at step 58. Turning it off gives an error message but unlocks things anyway. The ISC preset can be reset using the factory method of using a jumper to put the bike in dealer mode since the OBD software is not yet working to do a reset itself.

Not by me. I haven't had the time to play with it. I did get the beta software from them. I have to pull the bike apart a bit for some reason my OEM plug is on the other side of the frame behind the rear tail fairing piece. I though it was accessible from under the seat itself.

I'm supposed to be letting them know if it works with WINE on Linux. But most of my time has now shifted from the bike to a bathroom remodel.

They fixed the error message on unlocking the air volume control. That's really all that was needed. They just need to change the FAQ so the factory method of resetting the ISC preset is used. The Strom ECM doesn't support a reset via the tool. With the latest beta version of software and the info to use the factory method of reset, the tool is fully functional.

Interesting. Not sure it will work with WINE though. We use WINE at work and it does not interface with hardware. We had to convert all of our license from USB dongels to license files in order to get WINE to successfully run any software that requires a license key. You may not be able to get the communications between the software and the USB to work...if you do though, I will be very interested in how you did it.

The software runs through Wine on my EEEPC. The question is what does the device show up as. As I haven't plugged it in, Supposedly if it shows up at /dev/ttyusb it will work by making a symbolic link to com1 or com2.

It's all unknown at this time as I haven't tried anything other then running the software itself under Wine.

Yeah, that just might work...hmmm Too bad I don't have one or I could try it as well on my linux box at home.

I just got it too along with a message from HealTech that is was available. I had to use the original disk to get it to load. The FAQ was updated to indicate the factory method of doing an ISC reset is required if the tool reset is flagged as unsupported. I've written back to ask if having the tool plugged in puts the bike in dealer mode for the process or if it has to be removed for the connector to be jumpered into dealer mode but haven't heard back yet.

If you can't get wine to work, I would suggest using kvm to create a virtual machine to run Windows. KVM supports USB device pass through, so that Windows will see the device instead of your host pc. This does require a CPU with hardware virtualization support, so an eeepc will not work. Any reasonably recent core2 system or newer should work though.

This is how I update my GPS on my Debian Linux system.
