I am considering using the Tankslapper tank kit on my 06 DL1000 - primary purpose is to protect the tank from the tank bag.

2003 thru 2013, The Tankslapper

They offer 2 options - the "Tankslapper" branded which is basically a static cling film, and the 3M adhesive backed version. Anyone with experience on either? I am leaning towards the 3M adhesive version due to its greater durability.

I may go with their total protection kit - in a light tip over it might protect the fairing a bit from scratches (though my crash bars should take the brunt of it). Anyone have a tip over with this on their bike care to comment how well it actually protected the paint?

I've been using it since my 2011 was almost new. Really like it although I've not put on every piece. I really appreciate the pieces that cover the headlights and around the front. I really appreciate the pieces around the tank where I drag my foot climbing on and off. Watch the videos he has posted, it can take some doing to get it on properly without wrinkles and bubbles. With patience it will cleanly cover compound curves. I still have a couple tiny bubbles from dust underneath the vinyl when I applied it. Watch for dust and wind when applying. Some pieces use a soapy solution using shampoo and water and some use alcohol and water. His instructions mention which. Perhaps 3M was soap but check before applying.

I recall my kit being a combination of 3M and regular vinyl. None have come close to peeling off but I did replace the curved piece near the filler of the tank after beating it up. Better the vinyl than paint.

I admit I don;t wash the bike as often as I should being white it does show the edges of the vinyl around the tank where fine dust accumulates. I guess a combination of Desert Southwest and too lazy to use water to wash the bike often enough.

I'd say go for it.

I used a kit of the 3M material on my SV, I was pretty happy with it. It is difficult to apply around curves.
I have some left over I've been thinking of cutting a shape to put on the tank to protect it from my jacket and tankbag.
