Thinking of getting another V Strom 650. I had a 2005 that I loved, then went to a Tiger 1050, then to a 2011 V Strom 650 which I never really fell in love with, but when it was totaled in NC, I went to a 2015 Versys 650 LT. Just can't feel at home on it. It is a great looking bike with some awesome factory panniers though.

So thinking of a 2017 650 XT. Should I or shouldn't I? Planning on a trip around Lake Superior this summer. Most all riding is one up.

OK, here is my take. First, I had a 2005 650 Wee until this past summer when I traded it in on a new 2017 650 Wee. I did NOT want spoke wheels. While some think they are cool and so much better off road, I don't ride off road! Why pay for something that is more work and trouble and not needed? The cast wheels have advantages on the road. (No spokes to tighten, run true, etc. )

Second, in 2008 I sold my BMW (in the picture) and picked up a Tiger 1050 which I really enjoyed. (everyone should have at least two motorcycles!). Fast forward to present....after putting some time and miles on my new 650 Wee (most of it 2-up with the spousal unit on the back) I am selling the Tiger as I don't ride it enough now as the new Wee is so much nicer than my 2005 Wee. The gal on the back also likes the Wee more than the Tiger so its going away.) The new Wee feels lighter, has more power especially up top, more features (ABS and TC) gear indicator, neat dash with lots of info, etc. As I told my wife, had we had this new Wee back a few years ago we wouldn't have bought the Tiger.

So, if you know anyone looking for good deal a very perfect 1050 Tiger ABS send them my way....I love my new 650 Wee and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for this style of bike.

Thanks for the reply. I don't really want the XT either for the same reasons, but I am being offered a much better deal on an XT that a dealer has in stock than I can get on a standard model elsewhere. I am used to spokes as I have run dirt bikes for years so.... At least i won't need to buy hand guards. Thinking about it.

I'm not a spoke fan either but the XT also gives you handguards and a very attractive plastic engine cowl. And I think that the XT may have a little higher resell value later on. The 2017 is my favorite , looks-wise , so I vote GO FOR IT. Also- If you want to travel to get one I've seen several dealers dow n hereselling new 2017 standard 650's for $6799.00 . I'm pretty sure one of them has no fees.

I like the look of spokes. I think they look good on the XT model. The only issue for me with spokes is whether or not the wheel can take a tubeless tire. If it can, like the Super Tenere, then they're great. If not (which I think includes the Africa Twin), then I'd probably pass. I don't know which category the XT falls into.

My opinion on beaks has changed over the years. Used to hate them, then got used to them, and now think that on some bikes they look good, and on others look awful. I think the XT looks good with one. I think Suzuki has done a great job with the redesign of the 650, and I like the new ones even more than I did my 2012. Wish I could add one to the garage,

I never had a bike with spokes, but something about the need for checking and tightening them occasionally and also them being a bit harder to clean seems like a reason not to own it unless you absolutely want the spokes for looks or off roading.

I may be overthinking it though.

I've put almost 50,000 miles on my S10 and I've never had to tighten a spoke. Some guys have, to be sure, but as a maintenance item for me, it hasn't been an issue. I found that personally, maintaining a chain was more work.

Cleaning would be an issue if you were obsessive about cleaning. I'm not; other than knocking the heavy stuff off the spokes with a scrub brush, I've never cleaned the spokes. It would be different if it was a Harley, or my old Road Star that had chrome plated spokes, but my S10 doesn't really demand that kind of effort.

Both XT models run the EXACT spoke wheels as the Super Ten....exact same. :smile2:

My spokes “haven’t budged” going on 18K miles, and as far as cleaning them.....I rarely do that, but it’s no big deal nor does it take long.

Don't plan on going off road, so really don't need the spoked wheels. But for a better deal on it, I can live with them.

Have these on a dual sport, but the Strom will be used on the street with an occasional gravel road, so just need "wind protectors" and the stock ones worked fine on the previous two Wees. Better than the Puigs I put on a Honda NC700X and the stock Kawasaki's on a Versys. Both bike are now for sale.

My last bike with spoked wheels was a 2008 Suzuki DR650.

I rode it 2/3rd's of the way across the USA and back (literally, no exaggeration) and on most of the Continental Divide Trail in July 2010 on that bike. In fact, two of us were on nearly identical DR650's and rode on or in mud, rocks, sand, hard packed dirt and on improved gravel roads. And on every type of paved and pot-holed road surface one might encounter. We never had a single problem with the spokes.

There is more to the bike than the wheels, so spokes are not a deal breaker or deal maker for me.

Naturally, IMHO
