Any idea what this clicking/tapping/popping noise is?

Howdy,

Started my 2015 650 XT a few days ago, and while it was idling, and I was putting on my gloves and helmet, I heard what might be described as a tapping or clicking sound. Here's a video (make sure the sound is not muted) in which you should be able to hear the relatively faint--but distinct--sound. Any idea what is causing that?

Thank you!

Sounds like zapping from grounding of coils. But idle sounds good. Very weird.
Humm…more like a clicking sound to me. Puzzling for sure. When was the last time you fired it up?
Sounds like a plug wire arching almost

My first thought too, plug wire arcing. Run it at night or in the garage with the lights off and see if you can see any blue sparks.

Two wires per cylinder, so. 4 places to check for a spark short. Could be a cap came off of a spark plug.

Sounds like the rear cylinder outside SP cap is loose to me.

Glad you bring these problems here instead of the dealers. I like trying to solve these problems.

Two spark plugs per cylinder.

For emissions, not power.
I think it is the timing chain. I have had other bikes with this problem and it is the same sound.
Yes, can hear it ok. Its not affecting the tickover so my thinking is that its not electrical. Is it there when the bike is fully warmed up ?

In case it is the timing chain, don't worry, it is a sound that will get worse with time but nothing will happen to the bike. Breaking a timing chain is very difficult.

When the sound becomes very very evident, change it, that's all. This may happen in the next 30,000 km or more.

Last time I'd fired it up couldn't have been more than 3 weeks prior. It's riding just fine--same as always.

Will do. I'll report back.

I will have to double check if the sound goes away after it's been running a while. I'll report back.

Or run your hand along them while running. You'll find it for sure, then.✌😂

Personally I think it is a valve clearance sound on a valve that is on the upper end of the permitted clearance. Sometimes when oil has drained from the head, such valves can be noisier than normal on start up.

Grab a chunk of PVC tubing, stick it in your ear and find the location of the noise.

So here’s the latest: I started it up today, and didn’t hear the noise at all. I rode for about an hour and a half, then when I got home left it running and listened again, and still no noise. So I guess at this point, all I can do is keep an eye out….or I guess I should say an ear out…to see if it comes back. if it does, I’ll post an update.

I know there are several opinions about your problem. I am almost convinced it is the timing chain.... When a chain is loose, it makes the same noise, and it usually attenuates when hot.

Nothing will happen for a very long time, but you will have to change it when the noise gets too loud.
I'd still bet electrical, not a mechanical sound. Def a zap of electricity grounding.
