THIS DECISION IS THE TOUGHEST YET!!!

I recently found a great deal on a Farkled up 2017 DR650 64xx miles without a warranty asking $5200 USD obo. HOWEVER!!!!


I have a dealer offering to get me a 2019 V-strom 650 out the door for 6899 USD due to them not having the 2018 model they had advertised online. Any advice would be great!!

Located in Oklahoma and plan on putting all the miles I can on either bike, riding it as often and anywhere I CAN GO.

I do have zero off-road experience but am highly entertained with the idea of having the ability to take off down any path I choose on the DR.

If I go with the DR650, I want to learn a lot of the mechanics and improve my abilities as a young man lol

If you’ve made it this far please leave a nice, well-written response of your opinions and thoughts on what my action should be.

I am going to ride the DR650 tomorrow afternoon when i get off work.

Not really comparing apples to apples--more like apples to bananas. LOL The DR is far more off-road oriented than the DL. If you foresee some technical trail riding in your future--and the DR is admittedly a heavy pig for technical stuff--then I wouldn't hesitate to go that direction. Reliable as a 24 oz framing hammer and lots of aftermarket stuff available since it's been around in nearly the same configuration since before the fall of the Roman Empire. If you think 90% of your riding will be on pavement (as most of us do) and don't plan on anything more challenging than some graded gravel roads and maybe some 2-track with decent traction, the DL would be my choice.

I own both, and would be happy to discuss anything specific with you.

Having said that though, the DR650 is a great bike, but it is a big single. I personally love big singles, and have owned a lot of them. But if you haven't yet, they might not be your cup of tea.

The DR is lighter, easier to maneuver, better off-road, etc. But it is not fuel injected, and it gets a lot less mileage than the V-strom 650.

As badjuju said, this decision really turns on what kind of riding you're more likely to do. The DR650 is certainly capable of around-the-world riding, but it's not going to have the same kind of highway performance as the V-strom. If you like being able to pass slower vehicles on the highway, the V-strom can do that a lot easier. And it's pretty good on dirt roads, but serious off-roading is not for a V-strom without significant upgrading that is likely to put you into a category where you should have bought a KTM in the first place.

I can honestly say I've owned well over 100 bikes, and the DR650 has been my favorite. It's not particularly fast, or pretty, or really anything. But it's reliable, comfortable, doesn't ask for much maintenance, and it's kind of like a loyal old dog. Always happy to ride anywhere, whether it's truly capable or not.

I strongly recommend you go ride both of them. If you lived closer I'd let you take mine, and truly recommend you spend a full day on each (although the dealer and seller probably won't want you to do that). Only then can you really know what is going to "fit" you better for the long term.

They're both great mounts, and you'll not go wrong with either one. They're both solid and trouble free, with tons of aftermarket support. But if you really want to start doing your own maintenance and mods, the DR650 is probably the better choice. Particularly if days-long tours aren't going to be part of your routine. If you're into looks, the V-Strom is better looking, and the DR650 looks like an ugly bulldog but you can drop it and beat it up and it'll still be happy for the next ride. My DR650 has been used to teach a lot of new riders how to ride, and it's been dumped dozens of times, and still it always starts and runs. I don't think the V-Strom would be as resilient.

My advice is to be honest with yourself.

Those two bikes are on different ends of the function scale. The ONLY two things they share is the brand and engine size.

DR 650's are fit only for shorter asphalt trips. Stay clear of large highways, they don't like running 75 mph much. Great on dirt roads but like mentioned above they are still a pig in single track and mud.

DL 650's are very happy on any highway. Happy on gravel and dirt roads. But don't kid yourself into thinking you want to try rutted paths, mudholes and such on one. Especially with no experience at that kind of riding. Even riding a lot of gravel and dirt, you will be well served by changing tires to a block type aggressive tread.

It is VERY easy to get tired of a DR 650 ( or KLR 650 ) as they simply have a limited range of where they do a job well. If you live in the back country and have rural roads, dirt roads, fishing hole access they are wonderful for that.

Decide how you plan to ride over the next few years. That will decide the bike you should buy.

If you haven't had something like the dr650 you really should at some point. Among the bikes I have owned were a Honda NX650, a DR650, and a Honda XR650L. any bike is not forever, I usually fall in love with something else every 2 or 3 years. I buy used not new and don't lose too much on depreciation. for everything but freeway trips of some distance the DR is as good or better. not that it matters but I have owned my dl650 for some time and really like it, but if I had my old dr650 I would be liking that.

650 single, ah yes roll on the gas, lean back and pull the front wheel up in 2nd gear. come around a corner on a smooth dirt road with the back end hanging out as far as you want it to hang out.

the dl is more comfortable for a longer ride. important for us older gentlemen. which you will be some day.

Having owned KLR's for the past 10+ years and now a 2009 DL650...Get both!

The KLR is even less off-road friendly than the DR but I love em' for what they are. Between the two I've owned I have over 30k miles on the platform.

And, get both...

You can learn and do a lot of the work on your DL650 as well if you so desire. :wink2:

Just FARKLEing them out is a riot IMO.

So i took the DR out yesterday, definitely differs form the V-strom a lot!!! I definitely feel safer on the Strom. Not that I am necessarily. Still 2 wheels. Is 2 wheels.

I guess the, be honest with myself part; is the only way to truly decide which route to go.

I know I want to travel across the country etc. But how much time do i have to do those trips etc right now? Not as much as I think I DO!!

I guess I will try and find a couple of used bikes and buy one of each!! Located in Oklahoma and up for a fly and buy, if anyone knows of any sweet deals inside the U.S!

What kind of mods and farkles were on the DR? If you buy that and don't like it as much as you thought, you can always sell it and get a vstrom.

I'm a big believer in buying used bikes because they take a big depreciation hit. There are still leftover 2017 and 2018 vstroms, so that suggests Suzuki is making more than the market can swallow. You might buy the DR, ride it a year, and find a very cheap vstrom over the course of the next year. Particularly in the winter or tax season market.

If I hear of a killer deal I'll let you know, but I am in eastern WV!

That would have been a groovy idea if I would have seen before my purchase lol.
