So I'm leaving on a trip to new Mexico in a couple of weeks. It should be about 4000 miles there and back. I just replaced my bald rear tire, but I'm not sure if I should also replace the front. Can anyone judge based on this picture? Looks like about 2-3mm of tread left.

Buy a new one (online is cheapest) and bring it with you.

Otherwise you will ruin your trip worrying about it. The hassle of bringing it with you will be less than the anxiety of concern over whether or not you can make it home on a bald donut. :yesnod:

I speak from personal experience.

change it b4 you leave home

the roads out here are extremely hard on tyres

worst case scenario, you will have a spare, w/ a bit of life left

save your time out here for the trip, not tyre troubles

just an old man's 2¢ worth

Yeah, I'll change it before I leave. Better that than having to bring along a portable compressor and the extra tools. Thanks!

My first trip out west I called ahead to have a set ready for me at a dealer in Montrose, Co. When I got there my tires were still good so I aked if I could wait 'till I got back from 'Vegas (and over two thousand miles in Utah and New Mexico). They made the tire change while I walked down the street to have lunch five days later.
From what I read I expected to get 7500 to 9000 miles on the OEM tires. I ended up with over 12,000 on that set and never saw the wear bars.
I'd call ahead and have tires waiting for me before I,d pack them unless I was heading for a remote location where it was necessary.
