I've been a 'member' here for a long time without actually jumping in and buying a vstrom. Partially because of the lack of good used rides for sale, guilt trips from the missus, and because I have a great (but old) bike now. Checking the listings near me now I can pick up an 05 DL650 for $4999 and there is a new 09 DL650 going for $7499 if it hasn't sold yet. Don't know what colour it is. It's mid July and I have a busy August coming up, are these the deals I've been waiting for or should I wait for an even better deal in the off season? I'm not missing anything because my bike works and is more powerful than a Wee, but I've wanted one for a couple of years now. Money isn't too tight, but yes, the wife does come into play here since she is spending a lot of her own $$$ on schooling right now. Wish I could stop thinking about it but I can't when I see all these great bikes decked out with Givi bags...

Well of course I can't make the decision for you but I can offer advice! ;)

For an '05 $4999 seems high to me. My '05 was less than that and it came with full luggage and some other nice accessories.

I would say to continue to keep your eyes open if you're looking to save some cash. On the other hand if you've got the money and you're ready go for it!

I think boths prices are decent. If the 05 has some accessories, well cared for, and low mileage, than all the better. As you know these things are hard to come by. It's really only up to you if you want to "hold out" for the great deal. You could be waiting a while..

I'll add, check the Classifieds here on the forum. Some greats deals to be had if you willing to drive or fly and ride home.

Good luck in the hunt. The 650 really is a great bike...

Now, today

Buy one now, today. Well, maybe not that quick, but soon. Maybe a sign of advancing age (nah, probably not) but more and more I regret not doing and getting things sooner. The Wee is a great bike, is bound to be far, far better than ANY old bike. If you wait a month or two to get one, I'd bet you'll wish you'd gotten one sooner. If you know you are going to get one eventually, sooner is better.

I was looking for a used one through Craigslist and Buy and Sell. Not too many people selling them. I ended up getting a new Wee (more or less with the blessing of the missus) for 10,500 in BC, plus some gear discounts.

Noticed you're from Barrie. Been there long? I went to Eastview in the 70's (I think).

Good luck shopping and hope to hear you're riding a Strom in the near future.

Life's short! Buy now, ride now!

The perfect deal will come the day after you bought something else so just go and buy one and ride! You are missing a LOT of riding by waiting to save a few bucks.

If you can afford it, buy new. If not, get one of the nice use ones.

PS: Hey, did we tell you about the neat road not far from you? Heavy and I can show you once you get the bike..

Only been in Barrie since 1989, I grew up down in Windsor where the riding is pretty lousy. I'm going to see both of these bikes this weekend. The 05 has 21,000km, is it due for any inspections or service? The guy is the original owner but I see that the pipe is very brown (typical?)

Are you talking about the road up to Swift Rapids or Hydro Glen? I've been on a lot or great paved roads around here but stay off most of the dirt ones. My Shadow is pretty dirty right now in fact. Last Friday I was riding up Coopers Falls road and making my way to 118. They've gone and torn up the road again. I was riding in deep black gravel behind a water truck for about 3km until I cut to Prospect Lake and rode down more dirt. There's a really nice little beach down near the end before you hit 118.

I haven't had one long enough to know how they age, but I'd probably change all the fluids in the '05 and check the brake and fuel lines. I've also got an '83 GS550 that has about that mileage and the only problems I had were switch contacts fouling on the starter and a weak battery. I'm sure members with more experience can offer more Vstrom specific insights.

If you get the chance, try heading up to Tobermory. I drove up there in '78 and recall it was beautiful country.

If you're planning to sell your bike, it might be a slow market. The local shops are winding down the summer sales and I've only had one call regarding the GS550 on Craigslist. I might have to wait until next spring to sell it. Try to get trade in if you can. Much simpler, in my opinion.

It's a secret that is only told to Strom riders! One of many! ;)

(But you are in the right general area!)

Since one more opinion might sway you, I'll jump in with mine. In October '07 I found a brand new Wee for a few hundred cheaper than you're talking about. (also in Barrie). My buddy has just spent about a year looking for a similar deal and finally gave up about a month ago (bought a GSX instead). If the best predictor of the future is the past, then $7500 might be getting close to a great deal. You might save a few more bucks if you can wait and find one in a few months. 'Course then it'll be snowing and you'll wish you bought in July. (I didn't promise only one opinion)
By the way, I'm about 15 minutes from Prospect Lake. If you're up here again and lookiing for a fellow strommer in the near future, feel free to look me up.

Good Luck,

shucks....

Well, to wrap up this thread, no Strom. The 'new' bike I was going to look at was at Suzuki of Brampton, and looking at the GTA moto website they don't have too many fans. The ad for the bike also vanished from the Trader, so I decided to pass on stopping in on them. I had the whole family in the car too, which is an inhibitor. The other 05 which I was counting heavily on was sold before I could get to it. Meet me after 1:00 (Sunday) down in Ajax he says, hasn't he ever heard of the horrendous traffic on the 400 Sunday afternoon? He sold it to the first guy he showed it to after we'd exchanged about 4 e-mails and a phone call. Anything goes when you're looking to sell. Still a bit pissed when he said he didn't have the sellers package, to me that means he isn't quite ready to sell it until I get a look at it...

I had "V-itus" for two years, just like you described. I sat on one and LOVED it. My wife didn't, said it was too tall. She talked me into a "proper" (to her) bike, a 1600 Kaw Nomad, which was o.k., but really was a dog. Don't get me wrong it was comfy, looked "proper" meaning like a H-D, but I just couldn't get the Strom out of my head! I spent two years on the Nad, and finally had enough, she doesn't ride that much with me anyway, so I traded it in, I could have saved some money had I bought what I really wanted to start with, but gotta keep the peace around the house. Hope you find one. Cheers-BB

Just to prolong my agony... the last bike I bought was also a (2000) Nomad, trying to find something better than my old Shadow. Paid $12,900 and sold it for $12,500. I rode it for just one year because it was an ordeal to wash it among other things. It just plain had a weak engine. I had to put on some V&H baggers, and then what do you get? Backfiring when you close the throttle. My stock 86 Shadow 1100 has a great engine and exhaust set up that I don't think today's cruisers match. Two carbs, four plugs and self adjusting valves. Add a shaft drive and the bike really is zero maintenance. Had it 21 years now...anyway I'm still looking at the vstrom ads, I've got money in the bank, I've just got to decide if I want to park my car in the snow all winter. I can't get my car in the garage if I have two bikes and the Shadow won't sell. Well over 115,000km, goodness no one will buy that used up thing. Here in Ontario most bikes like that sit around and have maybe 30,000km. It's a real shame...

one last crack at it

I'm going to Suzuki of Brampton on Saturday for a good look around. It looks like they have lowered the DL650 to a staggering $6999 which I know is tough to beat. I'll still make V-Tom proud one of these days...:p

took a peek around - very small motorcycle section, all crammed in one corner. $8700 out the door. I wasn't blown away, staff didn't encourage me to sit on the bike or anything. I did take a nice ride through the Forks to get there. They were a little busy gossiping and the like. I'd really rather find one with bags and a centre stand already put on for under $6000 - something will come up

Brown, normal

The guy is the original owner but I see that the pipe is very brown (typical?)
The pipe is stainless, it gets brown if you don't polish it every other day. I just turned over 3,000 MILES and keep looking at wondering if I should start the polishing process or just let it go.

I lurked for over a year and regret not buying sooner. I have to ride in some of the worst traffic you can imagine, but it's worth it to be on the bike. Of course you have a bike and I did not so you can wait till the end of the riding season and get one at a deep discount and then park it in your garage and add farkles all winter. Unless you are one of THOSE who brave the winter.

R.I.P. (Retire In Peace, thanks for the great ride.)
