On a highway (not interstate), I tried to enter the highway using "one lane" that was open and in both cases, one person in the line of cars decided to quickly change lanes into my lane that was open. In a car, the risk would have been low. On a bike, I might have been dead.

I find it is common when we are on multilane freeways that if for example we wish to move across into a lane that might be on our Left, that another driver will also move across into the same lane (on his/her Right) at the same time!
My rule is signal your intention clearly and "headcheck,headcheck,headcheck". If we see a "darter" (random lanechanger that darts across lanes constantly ) stay well clear!!!

Glad your survival instinct and skills worked for you cavenger :) I dont think cagers - car drivers- have any idea just how a seemingly insignificant thing between cars could easily be fatal for a rider. As you have displayed, its up to us riders to watch our asses.

That is a tough one to avoid, it sounds like you know that trick and are watching for it, good stuff.

One that tries to get me sometimes is trying to stay out of someones blind spot, they are in middle or right lane on your right, and you have a car in front of you, if you move up so they can see you, then your too close to the car in front, very dangerous, if you hang back so the car on the right can see you then you leave a large gap that the car might decide to take. You never really know if they know your there. This is where loud pipes save lives, but my V2 with stock pipes is very quiet.

One tactic when on a multilane or in traffic is to remain visible..this means drawing attention to yourself- not by hi vis or wheelying! but by moving about your lane regularly. Dont just remain "static" and blur into the background. Swerve about a little (obviously in a safe manner-when safe to do so) particularly if a driver is too close to your butt! I find in 100% of cases if being tailgated, that swerving a little, confuses the driver behind and they back off ;) make yourself known to other drivers, make eye contact or give the impression you are watching them. Be dominant within your lane-or give the impression you are in control and confident.Dont try to be a bully or a smart arse.One advantage we have is we are up higher than most drivers (suvs excepted) so that can psycologically work in our favour. Also thank drivers with a wave or gesture when lane splitting or passing where you gain advantage or a driver acknowledges you and moves over etc.I usually stop beside the first car at roadworks etc and say"Gday, I,m just gonna slip in front of you mate , or do you mind if we just slip in front of you" if its dusty or muddy I mention we want to avoid being behind cause we dont have windscreen wipers and its hard to see!"
So far never had an issue, but I know it will come. You can usually tell if drivers are a$$holes by their bumperstickers or position on the road and in traffic. These are the ones not to pick a fight with. The bigger the tyres and the driving lights the lower their knuckles are to the ground.

I don't stay in a blind spot period. I hang back until it's clear and then throttle through.

Loud pipes don't save lives sorry. Most every car is reasonably sound proof especially with the radio on. The only time I ever hear a loud bike (when in my car) on the freeway is when it goes right past me. Never hear it behind me.

Loud pipes HAVE prevented accidents. Trying to be politically correct won't change that. Is it a nuisance, does it offend other drivers, does it give riders a bad image? Yup.
(I have stock exhaust.)

Good advice but I will add; make sure you check back in front of you to make sure that there is still a hole to go to. I have had it happen that when, after shoulder checking, I went to make a move and found the hole plugged either by the car in front of me changing lanes or the car in my intended lane has slowed significantly.

Head on a swivel, constantly.

I had a darter the other morning I thought I'd let her get far past me and I moved in the middle lane to stay away. I needed to move in the right lane, checked and started to move over and that spidey sense kicked in and I veered left just in time to prevent her swiping me - she'd come across 3 lanes of traffic to turn off because she waited until the last minute to move over.
She was in front of me at the light and I was >< this close to putting down the stand and having a chat.
These are the people you need to maintain awareness of even if you think they're not in range. It was a good reminder for me to keep potential trouble on the radar.

I learned a long time ago that if a tailgater is making you nervous zig-zag the bike within your lane a few times. No matter which bike I'm riding this usually works. That's how I got my ride name.

That "loud pipes save lives" rubbish has been bandied about for years. As another poster said today's cars are virtually sound proof. Add on the fact that nearly everybody drives with the windows up for the air cond, then they have the radio on or their earphones in and it is just utter bollocks.

If it were even remotely true, rather than just an excuse for the attention needy to have them, you would think that every Goldwing or BMW rider would be dead. You would never see these bikes for sale anywhere either second hand, they would all have been run over by folks who did not hear them.:smile2:

If you must have obnoxiously loud pipes to prove that you are a bad ass to either yourself or others then at least have the balls to say why you have them and not use a sissy safety slogan as the reason.:wink2:

I use the zig-zag when I see traffic up ahead turning from intersecting streets and drives. This is a fighter pilot tactic that locks their retina on the moving object to study it closer and concentrate on it. This give you advantage as they are less likely to just go ahead and make the move in front of you. One thing I avoid anymore is not getting in front of a raging driver. It is easy to do in annoyance but then you are an easy target, unless you can move on.

Not everyone lives where it's hot. Here in BC Canada people are happy to open their windows to let warm air in, and we only need air conditioning for a couple of months of the year, so the demographics play a big part in "loud pipes save lives".

I should add that I do not have loud pipes. :)
