HI Everyone, great to on here!

Oct 2015 was the year I became sensible enough to own a bike, so got my license and my "2014 Wee-Strom", happy days.

I commute to work about 20 miles everyday, have great choice of varying routes, and have an "all the gear no idea approach". Happy riding in the rain too, but I'm sure that will soon wear off.

So, upgrades and mods, I think I need cowling/engine guard, fog lights, engine frame, saddle bag, tank bag,rear hugger, aftermarket exhaust in roughly that order, and anything else you lovely people think a newbie like me should be considering? I went all out bike wear and mission control (wifey) has since introduced this new concept called a budget. Happy getting my hands, and bike for that matter dirty, so just looking for parts, new/used don't mind.

I have hot-grips and knuckle guards.

Happy to review any previous recommended threads too, I have looked but there are so many!

If you will stay on pavement there is not a lot you "have" to do.

From what I have read, you should put in the headlight relay kit that powers the headlights direct from the battery. Check out Eastern Beaver for a plug and play kit. Or do it cheaper by picking up some relays and wire it yourself. Evidently the high power draw of the headlights can eventually cause issues in the electrical system. Do some searches on here to get the full scoop.


It is nice to put crash bars (engine guards) on since it can save the plastics if you drop the bike. Even just loosing balance when sitting still.

You may want a rear top box. Especially if you want to lock some things up when the bike is parked for the day at work. Lots of options for this. The cheapest is to just get an Action Packer at Walmart and bolt it to your tail rack. It is a plastic storage tub that does have a place to put on some locks. I had one on my old KLR and never had issues with water getting in. Looks like crap. But works.

If you getting out on dirt roads. Then that increases the want list.
- Aluminum hand guards will keep from breaking you clutch and break levers when you drop the bike.
- Engine crash guards for sure.
- Skid plate.
- Different tires.

Like to haves
- Tank bag is handy. Lots of options.
- Power socket so you can charge your phone.
- Tail light that flash's for a bit when you hit the brakes. Gets people's attention.

If you are going to do trips.
- Side luggage racks and saddle bags.
- GPS mount and power wired in to the bike.

The list can be endless. So take baby steps and understand what you have to have vs what you would like to have depending on where you will ride.

Only my opinion, but, forget the exhaust. That usually also requires putting on an aftermarket device to also remap the fuel injection system. From posts in here it seems there is not much gain in HP and can decrease the fuel mileage some. And it is expensive.

Congrats on the license and new bike!
1. The fist thing any new rider should invest in is well fitted safety riding apparel and gear, sounds like you are already there
2. The second is an investment in your future, accredited additional training!
3. Thirdly is ergonomics and safety; mirror extenders, handlebar mods, seat, additional lighting, etc..
4. The fun stuff. We have good vendors here to use if possible
