I am looking for feedback from anyone who has tried a Corbin seat or similar. A friend of mine has a Corbin on his Honda Magna and raves about the comfort on long rides. The Corbin for the V-Strom seems pricey, but if the comfort is there I would like to try it. Sure would like to hear from anyone who has tried one. Thanks!!

better than stock

I have had a Corbin for about 5000 miles now.

Seats and handlebars are very personal. No single one will please everybody.

I am satisfied with my Corbin saddle. I think is worth the money. If I had it to do over again I would have ridden to the factory and had it custom fitted to me. This is a service they offer but, obviously, you have to live close enough to Hollister CA to take advantage of it. It is about a 5 hour trip, one way, for me.

I found the stock saddle painful after less than 50 miles. The Corbin is good for about 100 miles between stops, even when I am tired but, even then, it is not painful.

It is generally wider and flatter than the original. I had to get used to it at first. It was harder to reach the ground at stops. It is also very hard. This is not necessarily a bad thing. I have had other Corbin seats on my previous bikes and they are the same. Corbin says give it 1500 miles to break in but I think it was more like 2-3000.

I have scuffed the seating surface with my boot while trying to mount/dismount with luggage/sleeping bag, etc... strapped on the back.

better seat

I know what you mean abnout butt-ache after an hour or so. After about a month of owning the V-Strom, I drove it up to Butt Buffer in Ephrata, PA (near Lancaster) and had it modified to fit me. Peter (owner) peeled back the stock cover, shaved down the foam to fit my sitting position, then routed out an area for a gel insert. Once that was in place, he covered all with a thin foam, buffed out all of the seams, then put the cover back in place. Outward appearance - just like stock; feel - absolutely great. All for only $125. I left the shop and rode 4 hours straight to get home. No butt pain! A few days later, I road 5 1/2 hours (mostly interstate) withoput stopping for my first ever road-trip. Unfortunatley, that was the last I rode my bike (totaled it - I've mentioned that elsewhere on this website recently).

I highly recommend Butt Buffer. The owner also has a shop in Ocala, FL. He has told me that he also takes seats through the mail. I'd recommend going there - he takes plently of time making sure that it fits you just right.

does butt buffer have an email address or web site??? sounds like what i am looking for and ocola is not that far. btw what did you do with the old seat???

Butt Buffer

The original seat is the one which I had modified. Unfortaunately, it went to salvage with the bike after it was totaled.

JayHawk has the right website. There is an article in the May issue of RoadBike on Butt Buffer - which is how I found out about them.

I recommend you ride up to Ocala and check them out. (I am originally from Ocala - and used to hop down to Orlando quite a bit - years ago. I still have family in Ocala - since 1962!)

V-Strom accessories

John Stewart - you sent me personal e-mail regarding tank 'bra' and throttle-lock. Corbin Seat

Corbin's are great seats but there's a definite break-in period with them. For what you get, it's a pretty damn decent seat, and you can order it with trim colors to match the color of your bike for minimal (if any) increase in cost, making it an amazing deal.

I opted for a custom-fitted saddle that's made locally by Rich's Custom Upholstery, a nationally renown custom saddle maker for several Iron Butt Rally winners. These guys take over four to six hours to flawlessly fit the saddle to your butt and make it while you wait (if you've booked an early morning appointment) and the quality of work is phenominal!

My saddle is upholstered in a combination of black carbon fiber textured leather in the driver's seating area and rear side panels and smooth leather hides with contrasting yellow top stitching on forward side panels and passenger seating area. It's absolutely gorgeous and superbly comfortable. They even frenched the seams of the contrasting hides to flow with the lines of the 'Strom's bodywork! Cost was just a bit over $500 which, when you consider how much time was spent building it, is a stunning bargain. I'll get pics of it up next week.

By the way, Rich also does custom work for folks spending a few days in town and will bust it to get their ride's seat done same day if he's got advance warning.

I have put a few hundred miles now on the new Corbin seat. It does make the bike ride taller. I'm 6'1" and can now only get both feet on the ground but not flat footed, I like the firmness and think it is a big improvement over stock. It looks good too. BTW, if you have Jesse bags, the front of the rack where the bag support hooks up, causes the bolts to be higher and the Corbin won't lock down. The bolts also chew up the bottom of the corbin seat. I took out the spacers and also used a flat head bolt instead of the socket heads. Now it fits after putting some spacer metal beneath the attachment plate. Just a heads up.

I've got around 15000 miles on the VStrom now since I put on the Corbin seat, and I gotta say its one of the best modifications I've made. The stock seat was good for only around 100 miles before real pain set in. With the Corbin, I regularly run through a full tank between stops when touring, and have done many 700-800 mile days and a few 900-1000 mile days. I've never had a problem with my ass being sore at the end of a day.

The Corbin is wider and flatter than the stock seat, which effectively raises the seat height. Also, the smooth leather is a little slippery when I'm wearing my Aerostich. If I did it again, I would get the textured leather. All in all, for the $$, its one of the best mods you can make to the Strom.

I've found the stock seat on my 2002 V-Strom quite comfortable, but would like to add a passenger backrest for my wife. Does anyone know of a backrest for the V-Strom, other than the Corbin?

thermarest sportseat

I used a thermarest sportseat against the givi top box. Its air adjustable and my sweetie loved it on our trip down the baja. I held it in place with a cargo net.

Honda (in their street accessory catalog) has a tank protector for VFR's. It's about 10"x4"x1/2" deep and made of soft rubber with a stick on backing. Makes a perfect backrest pad for the stock Suzuki hard luggage. Fits perfectly and very easy to install, just peel and stick.

I too am looking for a new saddle, but for slightly different reasons. Butt, not a problem.....balls however :oops: . I'm a fairly large man, 6'3" 320lbs.. When my butt is in the proper riding position, my sack gets crushed by the front slope of the seat......any body else have a similar issue? I have seen some mods where the seat is reworked to be flat from front to back....looks a bit too dirt bike like for me.

I had a Corbin on my 1999 Kawasaki Drifter, that had a price tag of about $1100 with backrests, and it was worth every nickle!

BACKEREST WANTED

Anyone know of a "bolt on" backrest that will mate up with the stock 650 seat?

I saw Corbins but I like the factory seat just fine.
