My husband and I will be leaving from Jacksonville, Fl at approximately 3:00 am. on July 2nd headed up to Swan Lake,ME which is by Belfast. We are looking at arriving in Maine on the 4th. We will be towing our bikes as I cannot ride that far due to health reasons. My main question is what would be the best way to avoid New York City and the best time to hit that area? If anyone knows of any other areas that we should avoid that info would be welcome also. We will be taking mainly interstates so that we can make good time up there and spend the week doing the most important thing which is riding.

Thanks in advance for all help.

To avoid NY proper take route 81 north from MD. or PA. follow to RT 84E to Mass Pike RT90 to 495N tort 95 into ME. I go to Northern VA often from NH and although its longer using 81 its less stressful and Cheaper toll wise.Check you atlas.

recommended Florida to Maine route

I agree with stockman, except I would get off I-95N in Fredericksburg, VA. Then Rt 17(N or NW) to Winchester, VA where I would pick up I-81N all the way to I-84E in Scranton, PA, to I-90E(Mass Pike), to I-290, to I-495 and then back onto I-95N. Once you are in Maine stay on 95N until Augusta, then take Rt 202 east to Rt 3 east to Belfast/Swan Lake area.

I used to travel from NC to Maine quite a bit and always thought this route was much more enjoyable than staying on I-95 the whole way. Scenery is nice and tolls are less, and if I remember right it's about 100 miles more than staying on 95 for the entire trip.

If you have AAA I'd check with them before your trip to find out if there is any construction to avoid on your planned route.

Whatever you do, stay off I-95 through Connecticut.

I tend to agree with everyone that I-84 is a better route into New England from the south if you want to avoid "stuff"...
