Long story short - worst oil change ever... ripped AL threads out of crankcase with SS bolt.....

I have owned, ridden, and (apparently, poorly) maintained quite a few bikes - I am new to the Strom and after reading here am excited to see what it can do, but after about 16k km's in South Africa on a KLR, I feel comfortable in a saddle, but repairs were performed by good friend-collector of all fast things with two wheels.

I want to do own repairs and maintenance with this bike.... apparently I am learning to fail first.

I did a search, found out about the inserts - think this sounds best pathway, but am new to this idea - and kind of green in the repairs department, so wondering about DIY insert?

Should I pay/trust someone else to do it right??

Anyone in SoCal know how to do this?

The story and beg for advice:

So I bought a new bike - you saw the pictures - my intent is to ride this one into the mountains, desert, and try to find places where once the bike's off there's no sound - I actually experienced this a few times in Africa - alone, where my ears rang from the quiet... amazing. But I digress....

Deciding I would like to be able to fix and diagnose severity of problems in the field - I want to do my own maintenance and maybe minor repairs - SO .... first service goes well, 300 miles on oil that is "glittery" was probably a little much - but we got it all changed, new filter - brand new repsol oil in belly and pop the missus on for a ride (after checking for leaks running it twice to temp at idle, no drip in sight.

Off we go down for the first stop - the mailbox. Now this thing is literally 6 blocks away - pull up, drop off the letters and off we go! 10 feet down the road, dreaded burning oil smell.

Fast forward past the roadside rescue and glorious return of the steed of which I am already fond.

Drain the oil, check the apparent spot of the leak (around the oil filter) and much to my chagrin, as I screw off the new filter to inspect - there it is - the gasket from the previous one cocked sideways in the inglorious hole.

Spit, cuss, disbelief.

A freshman mistake - the kind of thing you are told not to do your whole life - and when it happens, you realize that wisdom has laid upon you the additional power of experience. Light bulb on, dark corner remedied.

One last spin around to make sure it's buttoned up - start pouring new repsol oil - the kind that factories recommend, and a price tag to match - only to see it continue its path all the way to the same surface holding me up. In flagrante collecto, a straw colored puddle on the floor. Stunningly clean for what generally oozes from second, just as vital, hole.

Spit, cuss in new languages, flaring nostrils.

Lesson of the day:
"In a battle between stainless steel and aluminum, the SS is bound to win."

So here is the shameless beg for advice:
What do I do after I prove that a SS plug will rip the threads out of aluminum crankcase?

Throw the whole bike in a trashbin?

How bout real options I've read about, while in missing man formation:
1) SS self-threading sleeve? $35
2) Have it professionally done? $35 plus labor
3) Use blue RTV and a drywall screw? Ridiculously cheap.

Hope your smile gives itself away....

Suggestions encouraged, still like the steed.

I don't know about the 1000 but the 650 requires two full spins of the filter after it makes contact. Are you doing that, because if it's a 650 and you are not it will probably leak.

thread

there is a thread here somewhere from A GIRL that shows the whole process of doing the fix . if done corectly the insert method will be better than new . take your time and find someone to help you and all will be ok

I don't know about the 1000 but the 650 requires two full spins of the filter after it makes contact. Are you doing that, because if it's a 650 and you are not it will probably leak.
How much you tighten the filter after gasket contact is dependent on the specific filter you are using. The round gasket type require the multiple turns to tighten but flat type gaskets do not and can be overtightened. 650 or 1000 doesn't matter.............gasket matters.

That is correct. I should have been specific with my post and referred to the stock filter, which has a round gasket and requires two spins pas contact. I just forget that people use other oil filters.

Thank You All...

I have been lurking here for a while, tried to read through all the pertinent posts, and enjoy the banter about who's got the best bike - it's rides for the middle of the week!

I re-threaded the hole using a insert from NAPA that was listed on the board here:

Installed and not a drip in days many miles - very awesome!
