Adventuretech Auxiliary Lights for DL1050

This review should have been done a while ago in Spring 2022.

The DL1050XA/XT has LED Lighting which I feel is quite good when aimed properly. The challenge with Manufacturer LED lighting is there are no user replaceable "Bulbs". While odds are slim of it happening, if they stop working that means you need to buy a new circuit board. I doubt any local place would have a circuit board so that could be a big problem for me on a long trip.

For the reason above I wanted to have a set of Auxiliary lights so that I had lighting in the event the main light stopped working. I ordered Adventure Tech's Auxiliary Lighting all in one kit for the DL1050. The came with some very powerful clear auxiliary lights with an amber lens that can be put over the clear lens if I wanted amber lights. The kit included a mounting bracket and wiring harness. Sometimes (much of the time) I overthink things and when I wrapped my head around it the bracket was easy to mount and does a good job of keeping the lights secure. I don't know if I ran the wiring harness properly but it otherwise was pretty much plug and play.

I have had them mounted on the bike for about 56,000 km / 35,000 miles since April 2022. They have been on the bike to Key West and to Seward, Alaska.

The clear lights are incredibly bright! They pretty much turn night into daytime! The amber lens cover cuts the output a bit and people tell me they are very visible and even when riding at night with the amber on they rarely seem to upset oncoming car drivers . (I try and turn them off though when there is oncoming traffic.) The lights really work well and if you are looking for a set of auxiliary lights I can't see how you can go wrong.

Things break! I know with electronics there is always the chance of something stopping working and in my case I did have an issue with the electronics. Our @richlandrick and his wife run Adventuretech and they were very quick at sending me replacements with no hassle or delay. Great Service! I've bought things from them before and I highly recommend them!

Can you comment on how these perform on switchbacks at night?

I've been caught out late before, and with the cutoff on the stock LED I was blind going up mountain roads.

I'd like to solve that cornering blindspot... the stock headlight works great for me in all other situations.

You can adjust them in the mount to point more up and down and left and right. I haven't tried any switchbacks at night so can say for sure but I suspect they would work well.

How well does the mounting arrangement protect them in the case of a fall?

No idea but I suspect they would be okay as they are tucked in reasonably close.

Here is a picture from Adventuretech's website:

If you have crash bars, they are likely safe in a tip over or even a more energetic get off. It was one of the design considerations for the light bar.

I have my right one pointing slightly to the right to pick up wildlife better at night. The beam pattern is more of a wide flood light than a pencil beam, so they light up the right of way ditch-to-ditch quite well in a curve, no matter the banking angle. Road signage, even overhead reflects extremely well, even with the lights aimed low.

They are a rigid mount rather than flexible like the turn signal stalks, but well inboard of any make of crash bars if mounted using Adventure Tech's mount (see @richlandrick's photos).
I have mine mounted firmly enough so the aim stays true, but not death grip tight; I can move them in all directions with moderate effort so as to provide some give in a fall. Full fork compression bumps or a hard bash on the skid plate may knock them out of alignment slightly, but for the typical gravel township and occasional hard pack two two-track roads I run, they stay adjusted with occasional minor tweaking. I've not dropped the bike since I mounted my Adventure Techs., so I can't say if my strategy works or not, but now I've probably jinxed myself!

Mounted these on my 1050xt last year. Excellent quality and richlandrick is great to work with. Mounted mine on the stock lower crash bar, I didn't use Rick's mounts because they conflicted with my Heed crash bars. Used generic mounts from Amazon. And yes they're bright, I usually leave them on all the time for safety...
