Stopped in traffic, I always try to position myself with an escape left or right, if the person behind me doesn't stop. in first gear, waiting.

Traffic started to flow, moving forward, then BAM loud crash, car behind me looks like they stopped to merge left, as there was already an accident ahead on the right side further up the road.

Car behind them must have hit him, damage to driver front left, and the perp swerved to the right. Missing me

By the time I looked and processed the scene, it was over. Very unsettling, amazing how fast things can go bad. Just motored away, leaving the damage behind

True Story. I was sitting at a light a few yrs ago. about 15-20 secs. I start to hear tires squeeling. I look around, finally turn around, and I see a car flying at me with brakes locked up. No one was in my way, I quick popped the clutch, and took off. As Im moving, I look behind me, car skid past where I was. I pulled off in a parking lot, got off my bike. Woman followed me in. Asked if i was ok. I said yes. She then gave me the "this is why motorcycles are so dangerous" speech. This is when I went off. "Excuse me??? What the $%($!! where you doing that you didnt see the red light? it didnt just turn red. It was red for almost 30secs. I bet you were on the $%#@! phone, weren't you!!!???" She never said. She got in her car, and drove off.

And since then, I always have an escape route. and Always looking behind me at a stop light to make sure people are stopping.

Glad to hear everyone avoided getting splattered. Growing up I would always wonder why people would leave a big gap between themselves and the car in front of them. I have since figured it out, it gives you a safety bubble to aid in escaping idiots that don't pay attention.

I was rear ended at a red light in a Mazda 3 years ago. It was a low speed collision, I took my foot off the brake right before she hit me. Luckily I kept my distance from the car in front and didn't even come close to hitting them. Had I been on a bike I could have zipped around so easy! Anyways, damage wasn't that bad (physics yo!) and nobody was injured.

Yesterday in my town, mid day, bright sun, the driver of the middle car in a 3 car sandwich got helicoptered to the regional trauma center after being rear ended at a red light by a 90 year old.

plan an escape route and watch your mirrors.

People have an amazing ability to not pay attention- a few years ago I was on my way home on the freeway- there were several warning signs with flashing lights that the left lane was closed ahead-
I watched in amazement as a cager in the left lane never slowed at all and ran right into the back of one of those "impact attenuating" trucks that had a huge blinking billboard and flashing lights, still doing 75!
I mean, really, how could someone miss seeing that!

Three months ago i was 7th or 8th in line. One in front suddenly wanted to turn left and had to wait for traffic to clear. First behind him braked normally, second braked a little harder, third breaked a little more harder... You know how it is going. The one in front of me locked brakes, I barely managed to break without locking, and just when I released the breaks and try to squeeze myself paralel to the last car guy behind me bumped my rear tyre. I was pushed about 1m forward. First I wanted to pull this quy's head out of his ass and put it on his shoulders where it belongs, but then I had to calm down my wife who was totaly in road rage. Usually it is the other way round.
I just had mangled licence plate and rear fender was twisted on top of the tyre. Fiat that bumped me had half of his front bumper on the ground... I pulled rear fender back and that was it. No damage to tyre or rear end at all.
I will not fix licence plate, it will stay mangled. Whenewer I have to stop behind somebody I always pull besides him, I never stay behind. There is always place for a bike on one side of a car. I got pulled over by police twice since then, because this is illegal in my country. I showed both cops licence plate, explain them why it is mangled and tell them that they will never see me last in line no matter how many fines will they give me. Offcourse that had to be done in a polite way, no arguing. They both agreed with me and let me go.

I was rear-ended on my Strom end of April... month or so ago...
Sitting at a red light. Teen texter never touched her brakes. Barreled into me somewhere between 40 and 45 mph (according to the LEO and witnesses). Woke up in the middle of the intersection.

I'm usually *very* conscious about pulling to the left or right of the lane, and always keep the bike in gear... and I've avoided this very thing more than once, over the years. This one got away from me. Happens quickly. Strom was totaled. Still dealing with med issues now. I was completely ATGATT... Helmet was smashed on one side... can't understand anyone riding lidless...

Strom's gone... (but have a pretty new 2015 Versys sitting in the garage! -- can't live in a bubble... at least I don't base-jump... <any more>).

I'm not sure if you have these in the US but down here in Australia we have lots of roundabouts, we've had them for at least 3 decades and idiot cagers still don't know how to use them properly.

The issue is that the car driver who may be 2nd in line is often looking for his opportunity to bolt through the roundabout after a hole appears in the traffic on the right (we drive on the left side down here) so often the driver who is 2nd in line is so busy trying to plan his entry into the roundabout area, he is looking at the traffic on right but not ahead.....I was on my Wee-strom and had to prop coz of a BMW wanker who thought he was too important to slow down, shot through from my right and the cager behind me still looking at the traffic didn't see me stop and ran up my rear end.

I motioned for him to stop after the roundabout and he did so and was very appologetic but I had to sternly advise him that unless he is first inline, theres no point in looking for his time to go....and he bowed his head and agreed that he should've been watching what i'm doing.

Luckily there was no damage to both vehicles and we went on our merry way......but I had no where to go and if he had hit me a lot harder, he may have pushed me in the path of that BMW who thought he was some kind of boy racer.

I don't mind roundabouts...some better than others but jeez, you've really got to be on the ball with them....:yikes:

Cheers

First off I am glad you didn't become another number for motorcycle statistics, and secondly I see that you have a positive outlook on the situation!

Also, had to Google ATGATT....been lurking in the forums for a while now and never heard that before. Kudos to not "squiding it up" out there.

I have posted mine a few times.

Sitting about 7-10th at a light, when the car pulled up behind me I went ahead and popped into neutral to wait for the green. Light turned green and I let out the clutch and killed the motor. Reached for the starter button and BAM the guy tried to drive through me.

It almost felt like I pulled a huge wheelie, next thing I know I'm standing next to my bike.

He was just trying to give you a bump start!
At least the person was able to stop after hitting you. It is scary when you see the videos of the people that panic and cant find or never even try to hit the brakes after something like this.
Probably doing something else and saw the cars moving ahead and next to him and never even noticed you.

I guess we should all make giant yellow signs with big black letters that say F!!k and mount them to the back of the bike. Everyone would be mad at you but at least they would probably see you.
(I am actually against profanity on vehicles) but it would probably work, no more invites to the neighbors bbq though.
