The answer(s) to this question may be listed in another section of this forum, but does anybody know (in laymen's terms) how the ABS system performs on the V-Strom? Does the ABS only work on the front wheel? For instance, the Honda ABS system engages both front and rear wheels regardless of whether the front or rear pedal is depressed. I am looking into acquiring a Wee Strom with ABS, and any advice, especially as it relates to safety, would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. It is my understanding that as the VStrom's brakes are not linked, like how they are on some Honda's, the ABS functions on only the tire that has locked up.

So no, it would only activate on the front if you were braking with only the front brake, and only the rear if you were only using the rear.

Note: I have actually had this happen to me, now that I think of it. I've had the ABS activate on only my front tire, when it locked up after I hit a blind bump in the road right as I was hard braking due to vehicles emergency braking infront of me. I didn't even have my foot on the rear yet, so it was only my front tire. The bump made the front jump enough that it lost traction, and when it came down, it activated. I corrected, added the rear brake, and it was all good.

Thanks L&S. Bottom line, do you find the ABS feature worth the additional cost?
Absolutely. Especially as I ride and commute in the rain frequently. I found no reason not to get it, and it's worth having. There are a few threads here and on other websites where people have discussed the pros and cons of ABS...but I'm one of the ones on the pro side. I'll never buy another bike (outside of a dirt-only bike), that does not come with ABS.

Also, a great thing about the VStrom ABS is that if the system fails, it only disables the ABS itself. It does not lock up the system so you can't ride the bike...it only reverts it to a non-ABS bike. I have not heard of anyone's ABS system failing on this bike anyway.

I believe 2007 was the first year with ABS.
