Can I get some guidence on disconnecting rear ABS... learned the hard way that I need to be able to lock rear up when coming in hot on gravel back roads... can I simply zip tie sensor out of the way. Is there system issues which make this ill advised??? Two more days of NV back roads and ABS is not safe... thanks for your help!

This works on the earlier bikes, put the bike on the stand, start the motor, select second gear and spin the rear wheel, the system disables it's self.

You will need to do this every time you turn the ignition on and off.

I put a switch in my V2, I'm not sure if your system is the same ?

If you pull the rear sensor you will also loose TC, (I have my TC off 24/7 anyway)

I might be reading it wrong, but I think ChazEd is asking specifically about rear wheel.. keeping front wheel ABS active.
That is the ultimate dirt setup, but unfortunately I don't think anyone has achieved this yet.
Otherwise, Rolex's approach is awesome (disable/enable entire ABS system on the fly).

Not being a smartazz but its not a dirt bike. If you're going so fast you have to brake slide around corners turning off the ABS is only going to allow you to crash harder!

Once 500 lbs of bike gets out of shape on dirt you're just along for the ride. Especially on a pretend "Adventure bike" like the V-Strom. :grin2:

I actually like having the rear ABS on gravel roads. Like you, coming in hot to an unknown turn can cause some clenching of certain body parts. When that has happened I just let the rear go into full ABS while doing a threshold brake(not allowing abs to engage) on the front. I have found that this stops me quicker than if I turn off the ABS completely and slide. As Spec mentioned, once these pigs start to slide it's like you are on an iced over duck pond. The rear ABS modulating helps me concentrate on the front brake and steering. Anyway, try it and see if it works for you and it's easy to practice on a nice straight section of gravel. You could even drop some small cones, maintain a set speed before applying brakes at the first cone, then mark/measure the stopping distance in each "mode" of braking with a second cone.

After being a desert rider for 30 years I agree its not a Dirt bike....Might be a dirt road bike ????...>:)

I was kinda done with this thread, however it brings back some thoughts from my distant past. My favorite dirt bike was a Honda CR 500 I had 2 of them, favorite street bike bike was a BMW R1200RT. Looking at BMW MOA Mag. a couple of yrs. ago there is a New BMW ADV GS UP Sidedown in a rock pile with all the lasted GPS and Bags all bent up... W'T.F. BUY THE BIKE THAT FITS THE JOB....

Got it.... Not a dirt bike.... I'll refrain for pushing my skills and thrills until I can fill the garage with specialized toys. CE

Eh, I for one think that you deserve an answer to your question. Hopefully, someone will come along and give us all a solution to deactivating abs on the 2017+.

I can turn off the ABS on my G650GS BMW but I haven't been in that situation except at the BMW training center. Some things are a god send under the right conditions, mostly on the street.

It sounds like you are part way through a trip and asking for a simple trick to disable just the rear ABS function. I don't think there is a off-the-shelf solution for you. I do agree with your goal. Using the rear wheel as a rudder if a very effective riding technique.
I don't think messing with the system while you are away from home is the best plan. The system is extremely intertwined and runs through the ECU. Think of it as a "beneficial virus".

When you get home you can experiment with using a dumb rear master cylinder, etc. I did see a surprising comment on a 4x4 truck forum that speaks to this: "Well recently a member on thenewx.org did. He cut and switched pin wire #41 which is the brake light switch. Interestingly this is how the control module is told that you are applying the brakes. I always thought cutting the power or the ground to the ABS controller was the ticket, but no."
IF THAT IS TRUE _ That is to say that the system is using the the brake light signal as a confirmation, _one could possibly disconnect the pull spring from the rear peddle as a test. Let us know what you learn.
