Hello, new guy from Austin, TX. Almost bought a Wee Strom three years ago, but went with the KLR650 instead. Long story short the KLR was sold a year ago and I now have an XT225 in the garage (It's a great trail bike). I'm planning to buy a Wee Strom within the next week and have some price/dealer related questions.

I was quoted around $8500 OTD for an 08, that was without any haggling. What's a good OTD target price that I should work the dealer towards? Also, if any of you are from the Central Texas area do you have any suggestions on a good dealer that's not too far from Austin (I've dealt with Woods in the past)?

Under $7000 is the norm. Some variations involve local taxes. Do not pay anything for freight and setup. Freight is included in the MSRP and Suzuki pays dealers $50 for setup, which is fair considering the amount of time it takes. A paperwork fee of under $100 is common but only only on bikes that are heavily discounted. Last year's left over model bought in January can go for under $6000 before sales tax.

So I got a quote that played out like this from Aurora Suzuki in Seattle, WA
Non-ABS '08 Suzuki DL650 (Black)
6699.95 MSRP
398 Freight/Setup
Sub total = 7097.95

653.01 Sales Tax
101.31 License
50.00 Documents
15.50 Filing Fee

Total = 7917.78
WA sales tax should be 8.2% if I remember right.
Now the salesman said he couldn't give me a real quote since I had no intention of buying it that very day. So what all is BS in there? How can I talk the guy down to a realistic level without being a jerk about it too.
I read the 'receipt of trust' price from Suzuki for the dealer is $5786. Is that an accurate assessment and how does it get from Suzuki to the dealer, generally?
Funny part is I got a quote from Renton Motorcycles and it said 8186.57OTD for a 2008, lower down it said 7122.96 for an '07. I showed it to the salesman, he looks at the '07 and said I could meet that or beat it for an '08. He read a bit more and is like well wait.. this says here..and starts to backpedal. Then goes off their '08 price.
WHEW... anyway, this is becoming a headache for a decent deal. I definitely want one sooner rather than later but if it means I've got to get screwed across the board *shrug*

Thanks for reading all this :)

Hey scobu, I'm in the Everett area and...although I may regret it (because I'm somewhat looking to trade my SV650S for a v-strom), but there is a used 2007 (nonabs) V-strom dl650 for sale from someone on this message board.

Here's the craigslist ad: http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/mcy/603798162.html

I'm having trouble finding the forum post about the same bike, but I'd consider saving yourself a couple grand and get it used, IMHO.

Sounds a little high

I had 2 dealers say $7,200 out the door, and one tell me $6,800 out the door. I walked out of the $6,800 dealership when he wouldn't go down to $6,500, and am waiting for him to call me back (probably won't happen). Sounds like maybe $6,800 wasn't so bad after all...

$8200

I was given the "not the real price, but somewhere around" $6700 + $1500 in fees + sales tax for a Weestrom from Coleman Powersports in Virginia. Sounded like crap to me, as I still see a 2007 Weestrom on eBay for <$6, total.

Thanks for the replies folks. That 650 isn't half bad for $5500 the DL1000 is pretty awesome as well but sadly for some reason I've got a stiffy for the '08 650 in black :D Many washes and buffs in my future but I think it'll be worth it for the sexiness.
With your advice think I'll shoot for around $6800 or lower, if they don't bite it's only wasted time.

While we're on the subject I'm kinda wondering, how many people bought accessories when they purchased the bike? Some of these places are offering 15% discounts, 20% discounts so *shrug*. Much of the time the pieces are overpriced to begin with.

Happy riding everybody :D

Let me guess, that high quote was from Woods Honda...they are terrible...check out Central Texas Powersports in Georgetown...I am paying 7100 for an ABS 08 (if it ever comes in), they have a non ABS on the floor, you should be able to get the non abs in the mid 6000 range...Bill
