Anyone have a knock at idle with 92 octane. The dl1000 just hit 100 miles, so I refilled, then the knock started. The gas is from speedway. Any pros and cons about diferent gas would also be great. Thanx, Doug.

No reason to run high octane. I've been running 87 (as the manual says) in my '04 and have never encountered any problems. Even some here on this site have expressed issues using high octane and the problems subsided when they switched to 87.

I will switch back on the next tank full, fer sure. Any brands better then others? I did read the alcohol content was an issue in the manual. I don't know the ratios for diferent brands, so I thought I would ask. This is my first V-Twin, everything else was a thumper, straight two, three, or four. The v-twin seems sesitive to the octane issue big-time.

Any brand preference, anyone? Doug.

Many guys complain of poor performance when using anything other than 87 octane. I use 87 only. If my V-Strom ran any better I wouldn't know what to do.

Short answer - In Turkey; not a problem.

Long Answer:
Across the pond octane is measured different from the US. In the US most pumps list octane as an average of two different values (R+M)/2. One value is the research octane number (RON), which is determined with a test engine running at a low speed of 600 rpm. The other value is the motor octane number (MON), which is determined with a test engine running at a higher speed of 900 rpm.
It is a common practice in many European countries to advertise the Research Octane Number on their pumps, so you are most likely quoting that number. RON is often 15-20 points above MON so your comparable octane rating is somewhere between 88 and 90.

Doug - And anyone else for that matter... No name brand gas like Speedway, Hotspot, and so forth, is cheaper for a reason. Mostly due to the "additive package" that comes in NAME BRAND gas. Here in the south, every distributor's gas comes from the same terminal. Exxon/BP/Shell and so forth. What makes the difference is the additive package put into the gas before it's delivered to the station. Working for Shell, I can tell you that the additive's we put in WILL allow for a cleaner burning during combustion, thus not clogging up converters as quick as Non name brands. It takes years to see a substantial fall off in performance, but it will occur as the honey comb like converter gets clogged, cutting off the engines breathability. Hope that makes sense.

Usually an engine will knock under load. The worst is under full throttle but not quite in the meat of the power band. Like in 5th or 6th on the big Strom going 60mph then whack open the throttle 100%. Mine will sometimes knock then and premium helps that some. It does it more when temps are hot. If a bike is knocking at idle either you got very bad gas or it is some other noise.

I may have just found the answer to my seemingly odd knocking noise which I thought to be ittermittent, or air cleaner intake related I am going to use the lower octane gas and see what happens, I hope the weather gets better or the clothes will have to get warmer!! Thanks. (I posted in the "hello how are you" forum, I guess I should peruse the site more.)
