I was riding today and shifter fell out. I put it back but could not screw it all the way in. Do you guys know what key I need to tight it up?

Remove the shift lever from the pivot bolt: circlip and washer, clean it up. The pivot bolt has a hex head use a wrench or socket to tighten it up, since it unscrewed use blue Loctite when re installing. Grease up the pivot bolt and shift arm and make sure it moves freely, install circlip and washer.

Buy a new circlip (just in case) flick the old circlip off, pull the shift lever off. CLEAN the stud and bolt hole. Reinstall the stud, ideally with lock-tite on it. Can't remember the torque.
Grease that shaft, put the lever back in, install circlip. Slather the top of the circlip with silicone to stop it coming off. (Less likely with a new circlip but do it anyway)

Not sure what the problem is. Lock tite? Keep an eye on it before each ride?

How about a vice grip? I changed my bolt to a shoulder bolt. Got rid of the stocker.

Take the circlip off and then the shifter. Use the 17mm to tighten.

Ha,ha same on my '17, it seems to be "common" on 650 and 1000 vstroms.
17mm skinny wrench
and apparently some circlips need to be "properly oriented", since they are rounded on one side due to punch dye
