Before I got my dl650 I was thinking of the dl1000. I liked large bikes because I liked the power, and i like to ride large bikes and keep the revs down. Also i trust myself on large 1000cc bikes to keep in control. When i was riding a speed triple i met up with two brothers, one was a dl650 and a dl1000. I rode around the dl650 kept catching me on the speed triple, the dl650 guy was super good. We exchanged bikes, then i got on the 1000 and it was a pig compared to the dl650. Quite a big difference. I didnt even ride it offroad, but that initial ride i became more interested in smaller bikes. I didn't buy a 650, i bought a ninja 250.

My DL1000 is great for my commute (I've put 4,200 miles on it in four months), but I can't imagine attempting to man-handle this portly/top-heavy thing off-road.

When I had my KLR, I got why people got something smaller and lighter for off-roading. If I decide to leave the pavement, I'll probably look into something like a DR-Z400.
