Got my 465 with rap delivered today. Installing it on a 08 wee with ABS. My bikes apart ready for an instal but I have a question before I put it in. I bet there isn't a person at progressive to ask on a weekend . I would like to get a ball park idea where to set the preload adjustment ring. I weigh 230 with gear. When I load up my panniers I will then just crank up the Rap. I'll probably set the damping at 3. Iam just a gravel road adventurer . Anybody have experience with this? Thanks.

pre load

I can appreciate that you want to ball park the adjustment before install as I know form experience that it's a PITA to adjust it afterwards. you will probably have to use the tool and an extention from a seat area to get to it. My is on a Vee and I weigh about what you do with gear. mine is set at a little less than 1/4" on the threads, so that might get you started. the trick is that you want a bit of sag with just the bike then preload with adjuster from there to set running sag somewhere close to the middle of the travel or just a little less. did you happen to measure the bike before you tore it down? there is a max spec for spring height that should of been included, measure that out and that will give you an Idea of how far you can go. here's a link that has a lot of good info.

Well if anybody is wondering what the answer is to my question is........I called them and this was the response. The spring preload is preset so the spring length is about 7.4". You can crank it up a bit more (preload set ring) but many people get carried away and can damage the shock. The rap can turn a full 30 turns more which translates into more preload on the shock (shortens it by about 1/4 "), and supposedly that's translates into being able to handle about another 150lbs. What the man said! ?

It is a bit of a pain but that's exactly how you get at it - seat off, about 12" worth of extension, and two hands, one working the ratchet and the other holding the tool. It's as awkward as it sounds but once you're set up you get into a rhythm and it only takes a couple of minutes to change the pre-load.

i was considering getting that shock but

at 250 lbs. the recommended spring rate is 950 lbs.. I called progressive and asked what the spring rate is on the 465 with RAP he told me its rated from 600 with 0 preload to 840 with full preload. wont work for me unless I go on a CRASH diet
