2019 poll for 2019 Romney Camp N Ride!
As Wreckcheker and Dirt_Dad mentioned this spring, we want feedback on what dates are most attractive for everyone.

Considering it would have been nearly impossible to have picked a dry weekend in 2018, I was inclined to suggest going to our traditional first weekend in May. I brought that up with Romney and was met with hesitation. That weekend is in direct conflict with a the Apple Blossom Festival 40 minutes away. It turns out to be very challenging for Romney to identify food vendors (or even a single vendor) to support the Camp N Ride. The food vendors are at the festival and Larry always has to work hard to find anyone to support us that weekend. Without a doubt, it is the single biggest PITA item for the dealership about hosting the event in early May.

Rather than avoiding early May as an option, we are still putting it up there to see if people are okay with not having on-site food during the Camp N Ride.

The weekend after Mother's Day is also problematic in that is conflicts with multiple other adventure events traditionally held on that weekend. One Strom event and another official ADVrider event, just to name two. It's not our goal to step on any other event. It's on the list, but unless there is overwhelming demand, it's probably not going to be strongly considered.

All the other dates would be totally new for the Camp N Ride. As you vote your preference, please let us know if there are any other events we're not aware of that would make any of these dates undesirable.

You may pick your top two choices.

Not sure how to click on the poll. My first choice is the early to mid Sept. Weekend after Memorial Day is out. Myself and a friend always attend the Dirt Daze/Americade rally in Lake George NY. That is the first full week of June, which the weekend after memorial day would conflict with. Thanks

No matter when you hold the event some folks will not be able to make it and it will undoubtedly conflict with some other even either motorcycle or non-motorcycle related.

I suggest whatever work best for those putting the event together it the date/s. Those who can make it will and those wo can't won't. You can't please everyone so make it a convenient as possible for those pulling the plow.

Wet weather has been the "main issue"......I am for anytime late Summer or early Fall, as it tends to be pretty dry.

Unless they invent a weather altering machine wet weather will always be an issue. I live not too terrible far from Romney and yes the summer/fall is generally dryer but you still can't account for pop up thunder storms that will drop 2 or 3 inches of rain in an hour with high winds wreaking havoc on tent city then be sunny and 95* 3 minutes after it passes.

I'm all for the planner to do what works best for them. If you want to drive yourself nuts try get 4 buddies in a room and plan a 300 mile overnight motorcycle ride. One person will want to stop every 1/2 hour, another will need to eat at a certain time, one will like highways, other will want back roads. Some will need to be home at y 5pm other by 2pm and on and on.

Now plan a trip by yourself. Pick fuel/food stops and routes. Then call up your 4 buddies and tell them we're going on a ride and stands up at XYZ time. They'll show up and do whatever is planned w/o any issues.

One time my buddies lady friend was complaining about stopping at a McDonalds for a quick lunch stop on a 5 day trip we were taking that another buddy planned out 100%. My buddy told her if she didn't like McDonalds that she should plan a trip and try to plan routes, fuel stops account for rider ability/age, hotels, restaurants and points of interest along the way. She shut up pretty quickly.

Plan it an most will come. Give the masses a voice and the whole thing will get mired down to the point if extinction.

Have YOU been to this rally yet? I've been to 4 of them, and nobody is upset with or cares about pop up showers or the occasional storm, we've been dealing with rain basically the entire weekend for several of the rallys. We are talking cold rain and temps too, so a nice warm late Summer or early Fall would be welcomed. Guess I am fortunate with my best riding buds, as we are all on the same page when it comes to literally anything and everything. :smile2:

No worries there. We are definitely interested in the thoughts of the potential participants. But when it comes to finalizing the plan it will come down to Kevin (owner of Romney Cycles), Larry (GM of Romney Cycles), Wreckchecker and myself. The owner and GM are ridiculously easy to work with, so any true blame for what people don't like can be limited to Wreckchecker and me.

We have this opinion poll going on the three regular sites. Interesting to see the significant differences in results from site to site. Until the four of us sit down to review what you've all told us, and we hash out the details I really don't have any hints of what dates we'll be doing next year.

Regarding weather, we've still had more perfect weekends than washout weekends, but the score for each is getting very close. In 2018 we've had a ridiculously wet year. We had rain on 9 out of 12 weekends according to one TV weather guy...and it's felt like it. I'd like to think 2019 will be drier, but I've learned I'm a lousy weather forecaster, so I'm out of that business. I will say that even the weekends that had a washout forecast, the weather broke enough that the factory trucks still had dry enough roads to trust riders of unknown skills to head out on unfamiliar bikes. Perfect weather is preferable, but I believe everyone that came still had a great time.

Thanks to everyone for voting and letting us know your thoughts. My hope we can nail this down and announce a date before the end of the year.

I've been to Romney cycles probably 12 or 15 times over the last couple of years its fairly close to home. I have also been to Romney Cycle on a Saturday when the rally was taking place but not as a participant just as a coincidence. As far as actually intentionally attending/participating in the rally that is something I am not likely to do. Too many people for me.

Seems like we are missing Mid to Late September option here (in our poll) comparing to another two
That's correct. With the system for some reason denying the posting of this poll, I achieved it in the end by omitting surplus text, all symbols, and reduced the poll to only six options.

For some reason the software did not like one of those items. I'm going with the use of brackets but without further testing I am not sure which was the cause.

If you do want to vote for Mid to Late September, please enter that choice with a post entitled "Mid to Late September", and Wreckchecker or Dirt_Dad will find it and include your choice in their decision. So many people attempted to post this poll that I do not wish to now start modifying it. :grin2:

Good suggestion. We'll make the work. Thanks again for your assistance in getting this poll out there. All my attempts were met with rejection.

I think Wreckchecker did a good job over on ADV of summarizing what we are discussing. He's even come up with a question that you can just respond to here on this thread.

I doubt anyone will really be surprised to learn when you open up a poll in three different motorcycle sites, you're going to get three completely different answers. I expected that, and man did it prove to be true. The numbers below are what Wreckchecker was saying in ADV about the numbers there. Our Trooper numbers are different, but you get the idea.

Wellll - We have 16 votes each for the traditional weekend before Mother's Day and the weekend after Memorial Day, which would be June 1-3. People have been pretty vocal about not holding Romney in the July/August heat of summer and the polling reflects that. Dirt Dad and I have also had questions about having Romney in the Fall and we are open to it, as are the folks at the dealership.

Getting a food vendor on site for breakfasts is still a challenge for any of the three weekends still in discussion. Not saying it won't happen, but odds are not good right now. Since there is so much close up-town, it shouldn't be a huge problem. btw - If you haven't tried the VFW breakfast it's pretty good.

We are down to three weekends. Looking at competing events already scheduled or when they took place in 2018 puts the least competition on Labor Day weekend. Our first years at Romney were great weather and this year the weekend before Mother's Day is actually in May, so hopefully we can get a year of good weather again. Holiday weekends are two-sided swords, in that it lets people travel farther or relax, versus many have family commitments.

So here's a mini-poll for those three dates: Simply post which one of the three you prefer:
May 3-5 (Traditional Romney date of weekend before Mother's Day)
May 31-June 2 (is after Memorial Day Monday)
Aug 30-Sep 1 (is Labor Day weekend)

fwiw, To see part of how we got here, below is the list of competing events for all of our time that was mentioned above. We pulled together the ADVRider threads and other known events of 2018 and those already announced for 2019. The events ending with a period are announced 2019 dates and those ending with question marks were 2018 dates, so we don't know their 2019 dates. If any of you have corrections to this list, just post them with your vote and I'll update this post.

Thanks for letting me know your preference. If it doesn't work out to be that date it would be a real loss to know you're not going to make it. Should it work out that way I definitely would want to figure out how to catch up. We've got a long history in progress.

From Wreckchecker

Adding up the polls from the various threads, we come up with the following votes in the lead three spots:

29 votes for June 1/2 - After Memorial Day. (Besides, we gotta keep twodogs happy
)
.....Potential conflicts: Durty Dabbers?
25 votes for May 4/5, the traditional Romney weekend before Mothers Day.
.....Potential conflicts: Laurel Fork's 2nd weekend, Green Ridge Dual Sport? Classic M/C Day
21 votes for early/mid Sept.
.....Potential conflicts: Blue Ridge ADV NC? BWDR? Snappin Turtle NY? Meadows of Dan? Blue Ridge Rally?

Any more thoughts before we see if any are better or worse for the dealership to host us?
