So I took a demo for a spin and two things surprised me (compared to my 2012 DL650).

1 - The gearing is super tall. At 60kph it seems like you could cruise around in 2nd if you wanted it to be really punchy, or 3rd if you wanted it to be more relaxed. 3rd almost seemed too tall for 60kph. At 100kph it was happier in 5th. It seems these bikes are really overgeared for Australian speed limits. Have many people tried gearing them down?

2 - The engine vibrates a bit. I was expecting more vibration than the 650 as it's a bigger engine, but I didn't know if it would start to bug me after a while. In particular I do a lot of riding in traffic. While sitting at the lights the screen was visibly shaking due to the engine vibes. Is this normal or was the idle set too low on the demo or something?

Our V2 is smooooth, though I reckon the idle could be increased a bit,its only got 3700ks on it so 2nd service coming up.I.ll mention it then.
Re the gearing, yes it is tall but the max torque is at 4500 rpm so - quite low. I agree riding in 5th "feels" right on the highway -we ride 2 up so have extra weight , not much ;) and wind resistance. I,ve gotten used to it and sometimes leave the bike in 5th depending on the conditions.Changing the gearing would achieve the same thing at highway speeds but you would never get anywhere in the lower gears acceleration wise, as it is, the V2 has short legs when accelerating due to its narrow power band (max hp at 6500rpm) compared to our previous SV1000, I find I need more gears to accelerate rapidly rather than just "rolling it on"
Additionally changing the gearing will stuff up the (already optimistic) speedo.
So far the lower gears have been suited to low speed riding with a pillion ,ie "soft roads", should we find first too tall as we do more off road riding I,d go +2 on the rear sprocket. This will help the lower gears and increase rpm by maybe 4-rpm in 6th? then its GPS/memory or speedo healer time, to correct the speedo error ;)

Ummmm,, Let me get back to you on that!! I cant say I,ve noticed? I didnt notice the standard screen doing it, but fitted a Givi Air Flow as soon as I got the bike home. I havent noticed it rattling...its the sort of thing that I reckon I would,as my previous 3 SV 650/1000 had aftermarket screens (on naked bikes) that didnt rattle, so if a new screen on a new bike did, I,d be pissed off ;)

Must be something wrong with my 2015 DL1000. It seems to me to be as smooth in any speed in any gear at any time than my 2012 DL650 was.

It can do 120kph in second and pulls nicely until it hits redline. And it can do something like 60kph (not sure of the exact speed) in 6th at 2,000 rpm and only really isn't happy if I give it lots of throttle at that rpm. (And it isn't like it has bad fuelling, just you feel the individual firing pulses. It would be smoother if it had a much heavier flywheel but then it would become a tractor motor.)

On the other hand it cruises nicely in 6th at 80, 90, 120 kph or any speed you want to go and goes like stink if I downshift it like I used to do on my 650's (and still do on the 1000 but not as often.)

Now mind you it is probably just breaking in as I've only had it less than three months but I should hit 20,000 km in the next few days.

Thats a lot of riding V-Tom! :) The worst part about a new bike was the 4500rpm limit for the first 1000 k,s. now its "allowed" up to 6500rpm till 5,000 k,s however I did ride it at 7,000rpm in 6th gear for a kilometre or so :) (on a private road of course) so just at present for another 1,300 ks it wont be seeing many revs past 6500. The motor feels better each time we ride it so by your experience the best is yet to come! :)

I roughly followed the manual's break-in recommendation but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I think the important thing is to not do sustained high revs as that doesn't give the heat in the rings and cylinders a chance to dissipate.

Paul, contrary to the owners booklet, your second official service isn't due until 12 months or 12,000ks. Check with your Suzuki service department. I just l change my oil+filter myself at the in-between 6 months. 12,000ks seems such a long time to leave oil in a bike engine.

The 1000 initially felt too highly geared to me too after coming off a DL650. You quickly become used to it though and don't need to rev it anything like the 650 to get good performance. It easily drops down to 60 in 6th gear going through towns then accelerates smoothly and quickly when the speed limit increases. Going slowly off road I think the DL650 would be easier to ride due to the lower gearing.

I found my 650 was generally quite smooth, but the 1000 is a lot better, particularly when on a trip. No more numb right hand! Maybe the demo needed the throttle bodies synced, or something else wasn't quite right with it.

Gotta agree. I do oil every 5000 and a filter every second oil change. Just easier to keep track off as the memory starts to go! :confused:

Might have been a problem with the demo if it vibes that much?

I find my V2 very smooth. Swapped bikes last week with a friends BMWR1200GS and I have to say the V2 was a smoother engine. My friend agreed. He was impressed with the V2.
My fingers were really tingling after an hour of highway riding on the GS and getting back onto my bike was a pleasure.

We ride two up quite a lot and after our run on the GS (it had just 25,000kms on it) my wife said she's pleased we didn't outlay the extra coin for the Bavarian (I was initially contemplating and comparing them closely).

With 130km/h highway speed limits in the NT, I can sit on an indicated 140 (just under 130 real time) and it's all good (not too tall). Economy not so good at those speeds two up however, and the GS is better in that area.

I should add tho that I'm running a Power commander fuel controller (PCFC) which removed some low speed lean hesitation I'd been experiencing with mine and also improved the linearity of acceleration across the range. With 14,000kms on the clock I smile every time I ride it and that's every day cos it's my primary transport. And no, my screen (Givi) doesn't vibrate at idle.

Thanks stu53, I had alook in my "folder" just now and I have owners maual and service booklet (NOT stamped) with the 1000km service done recently GRRRR NOT impressed.
But no maintainence booklet??? outlining service intervals and schedules... GRRRR
FFS? I,ll be ringing the dealer tomorrow.

um, this could take some time...

Did you both only receive the 1 thick booklet (owners manual)and a skinny one the dealer stamps at times of service?

Yep, that's all you get.
I looked for you Paul :grin2: it's under heading inspection and maintenance page number/section 6-4. :wink2:

I wont however be changing my oil at 12,000 ks!! :surprise:
My gearboxes always tell me when its getting near time- usually
around 4,000 I start to notice upshifts getting a little notchy,5,000 ks and I,m thinking, mmm time to get a filter and oil organised.. then I may ride for another 1,000ks till I get around to changing it. :wink2:

(I,m actually 1/2 organised! I,ve got 10ltrs of :wink2: and 4 filters up my sleeve:grin2: Thanks Stretch49! :smile2:)
