2014 DL1000 Running a Bit Rough. Suggestions?

Hey All,

I have a 2014 V-Strom 1000 with 14k miles. Haven't ridden it much (like hardly any) in the past couple years.

Went to ride it last week, and it would idle okay, but would cough and sputter as soon as you gave it any fuel.

I figured the gas had gone bad. So I drained the tank, and refilled it with some new premium and some Techron fuel injector cleaner. Then I rode it for about 20 minutes. After the initial few minutes, it was running way, way better. But it still sputters a bit under hard throttle.

I'm not much of a mechanic. So I was just going to take it to the dealer for a tune-up. But I'm wondering if I should just run a couple tanks of good gas (with injector cleaner) through it first, and see how it does then.

A buddy had the same year/model bike, and says he went 55k miles on it without ever changing the spark plugs.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Air cleaner maybe.

Given that it ran better with new gas and injector cleaner, I would run another tank or so of the same and see how it pans out. Otherwise as @Spec suggests, have a look at the air cleaner. I have seen various photos over the years where small animals have set up home in air boxes.

The fine filterscreen on the fuel pump can become encrusted.
No amount of techron did anything to clear mine.
I ended up having to replace it and did the fuel filter bypass/external filter mod.
Ethanol gas is insidious, I only use it when I can’t find non ethanol.
At the very least fill the tank to the top with non ethanol when storing it and maybe some stabil , run it a bit to get it into the injectors.
I had to clean my injectors ultrasonically and it was incredible how much crap, varnish from sitting gas came out of them.

I just took it out and rode it for a couple hours. It seems to be running perfect now.
