2010 VSTROM GATHERING:hurray:
MONTROSE, CO

Well it’s getting closer, just a little over 8 weeks till the Gathering. First let me apologize for not communicating sooner this year, I won’t offer a lot of excuses, but knee replacement sucks. Let me bring you up to where we are now:

Motel is set; it is the Holiday Inn Express. They will serve a hot buffet breakfast daily. We will have a roped off parking area. They are going to have a cash bar @ both meals. The rooms are $114.00 + tax, no matter the bed configuration or how many in the room. All rides will start and end there. Please do your best to stay here as they have given us a “deal” on the banquet room. Yes, you can stay elsewhere, however, when you figure breakfast, etc., it won’t make a lot of difference. And we will get some comp rooms depending how many rooms are sold. All rooms must be confirmed by June 1st.

Meals are set for both nights. Meals will be hot and will include coffee, tea and dessert. Meals are going to be $25.00 per night or Friday & Saturday for $45.00. I have a PayPal account for you to use, see below. You can pay by check or MO directly to me: Mike Watkins, 2509 Stone Bridge Dr, Montrose, CO 81401. Meals at the HIE. Payment needs to be made by June 1st.

Stromers,
I will host the national gathering in Montrose, CO the weekend of June 25,
26 and 27. The Holiday Inn Express will be headquarters, they have the dining facilities that we need. They will shuttle to other motels for the banquets. They gave us a rate of $114.00 per room, normal rate is $140.00.
Will use the same format as the 2009 gathering in Rapid City.
Have several rides planned on road, let me know if anyone wants off road.
Look forward to hearing from you.
More as we get further along.

Wow, you gotta respect a guy that joins Stromtrooper and on his very first post.....he volunteers to organize a National Bike Rally. But good on ya man. I did look up your profile and saw that you are retired. Having the time to organize and run this thing off, is definitely a positive.

Late June is a great time to ride the paved twisties in Colorado (Western Slope) and probably 80-90% of the high mountain passes will be open for those with a wild side. (Several passes don't open until July.)

That being said, one of the best stretches of twisties in the nation is just 30 minutes away....Black Canyon (Click Here). And there will be half a dozen 200-300 mile, day loops that will be fantastic!!!!!

For you pavement guys.....

283 mile southern loop (Ouray, Durango, Telluride)... Click Here

299 miles eastern loop (Gunnison, Poncha Springs, Saguache).... Click Here

190 mile Crested Butte Loop (about 25 miles of maintained dirt road).... Click Here

200 mile Western Loop..... Click Here

While I am more partial mountain towns, Montrose is a decent base camp that will offer plenty of hotel and food options and some great riding.

Count Me In!!!!!

Off road, please.
There will be plenty of off-road opportunities and for a couple of days, I will be riding some tough stuff. I am very familiar with the area and anyone is welcome to follow my rear tire. Matter of fact....I may be following Billy's rear tire.

Finally, there is a wonderful dealership in Montrose, Davis Service Center (Click Here). One of the SalesReps is Billy Aller (Wide Load), a veteran StromTrooper...crazy good dirt rider on a Strom. Anyone needing service, tires or mechanical help....Davis Service Center is your ticket.

(Just made my reservation and have a room at the HIE!!!!!)

I was beginning to wonder when dates would be set for this event. I can't wait to ride the area. Now, I have all winter to make my plans.

Sadly, I'll have been back on the boat a week on this date. Can I send my son-in-law on his Triumph Tiger to represent me?

NO SNOW DAYS This year please!!

Again, I'd like to go, BUT as a teacher it's close to the end of school if we have 5 snow days here in NH. I might be a late comer (spring) if all "goes" well. Can I rent a Wee out there for the weekend? OR someone will to trailer it out for me and I'll fly in if school goes long this year (again)

I am just brain-storming here.....so pipe in with your suggestions, ideas and comments.......

WIDE LOAD, I think it would be awesome for you to put on a "Dirt Strom Clinic" at the beginning of the event. That way, riders can begin to use their 'new found' skills before they leave Colorado.

How about a Clinic on Friday, from 9-12. Then everyone can grab lunch and hit the trails from 1-4pm or so....practicing what they have learned. Then on Saturday, some dirt rides can depart the Hotel...."A" Rides, "B" Rides and "C" Rides......

"A" Ride....Pushing the Strom to its limits, high mountain Jeep Trails and Single Track
"B" Ride....Milder Jeep Trails and Fire Roads
"C" Ride....Maintained Dirt, all the way

Whatcha Think????
