Hey Everyone,

I'm a new member here, I recently made a little intro thread in the Stromtroopers section.

So I've been looking and looking and waiting and watching and looking some more for a used Wee to pounce on, and I'm finally ready for some ACTION.

I'm going to check out a used 2007 vstrom 650 (non-ABS) this saturday, and I could definitely use some feedback and advice. It has 32,000 miles on it, which at first completely turned me off from it, but then I realized that if it has been cared for, there are still many, many miles to be wrung out of it. This is my first bike (and first ever vehicle purchase for that matter) and I'm concerned that I don't have nearly enough knowledge to assess the bike. I think i was born missing a mechanical chromosome or something. I understand basic stuff like asking about oil, asking for invoices, looking at the brakes, and some other simple stuff, but I would have no idea how to evaluate something like steering head bearings or suspension health, for example.

So my question to the community is what specific things should i be looking and asking for, and what is the best way to approach the topic of putting the bike in a shop for a mechanical inspection, or even determining if doing that would be worthwhile??

The bike does have a serious number of modifications that i find enticing, but I'm trying not to let those distract me from the condition of the motorcycle itself. I feel pretty good about the seller, his knowledge, and care for the bike. He said that he lets a shop handle sprockets/chain and tires, but changes oil/filter and other easy stuff himself. Also, he posted a bunch of pics, and the bike looks good. Really good, not a single blemish that I could see. I'm just a little apprehensive about calling the shots myself, and I dont have any motorcycle buddies that could really help me with it.

So any advice, tips, help would be much appreciated. I will post the specific list of mods a little later. Seller is asking $4200, which seems pretty reasonable. Thanks for your help and thanks for reading my book/thread!

A service history is way more important than mileage. Shop receipts and a user log help check history. A bike with a lot of added parts that you want anyhow make it a better buy for you though the seller should no expect to make much money because of them. The condition and mileage indicate the bike is consistently used, which is much better than a neglected one with low mileage. A properly cared for Wee will exceed 100,000 miles with little beyond scheduled maintenance. Check bearings by feel. Get the testing wheel off the ground and spin it with one hand with the other hand on the axle. You'll feel the axle rumble if the bearings are bad. Turn the front wheel from stop to stop with it off the ground to check for notchiness which would indicated new steering head bearings are in order. Check for signs of deep scratches, loose fasteners, seat tears and fluid leaks. I'll let others speak to the money issue.

Ask if/when the coolant and brake fluid were last changed....you look at the brake fluid through the master cylinder window on the handlebar - it should be clear and not yellowish. Look at the brake rotors to see if they are smooth or have ridges - probably not perfect but should be pretty smooth. See if the clutch lever is not stiff and the throttle snaps back sharply. If it all looks good you have some advantage because most will be turned off by mileage - and it's good to get your first bike all fitted out. I would off $3500 and be willing to work up some from there if I thought it is well maintained. Good luck!

• Nearly new chain and sprockets (1,000 miles ago)
• Nearly new rear tire--1,000 miles ago (Bridgestone Battlax BT45)

I think I may try to convince the seller to include the luggage depending on what he has. He posted pictures of pretty much all the mods listed, so at least I know it's all there.

I'm also wondering if I would be able to run a heated vest during winter with the current electrical setup, and whether or not there's anything I need to pay close attention to with regard to electrics.

Bought it.

In case anyone is curious, I did end up buying the bike. Bought it for 3750, reluctantly, and I think I made a good decision. It feels good to be part of the club now! I feel so very loved when I pass other riders on the road and they give me "the wave." :thumbup: Anyway here's to many happy, safe miles to come, and to all the new riders and Strom-owners out there!

Congrats on the bike. I bought my 07 650 w/ ABS with a little over 33K on it a little over a month ago. Love it. Enjoy the ride.
