So I am doing a clutch replacement this weekend on my vstrom. I called the service center and they quoted me on a pressure plate as well. I bought the Kit online which included Friction plates/Gasket, springs and steel plates. My question is do I have to do the Pressure plate as well? My clutch seems overall hard, but I assume that due to it be worn down as I have already adjusted the pivot assembly to the max.

Replacing clutch plates isn't going to make the pull any easier. It's possible the clutch cable has gotten sticky if you made the mistake of lubing it. It is Teflon coated and shouldn't be lubed. It can seem like it's getting harder if you're getting on in years and it's the only exercise your hand gets. Mine started bothering me in my sixties until I started some grip exercises.

A Strom clutch needing replaced is practically unheard of, you have something else going on very likely.

GW and Big B are correct. The basket can get some notches worn in it, but I would do what GW has recommended first. Keep the parts in packages you might not need them.

When a clutch is slipping you need the parts you bought. Strom clutches are very robust.

There has been a few DL 650 clutches needing replaced. Most due to incorrect adjustment, the others just plain abused to death. If not slipping, there is a very good chance you don't need any plates or discs. Follow greywolfs advice and look for another problem before opening up the clutch.

The service center quoted a pressure plate because it has a friction surface for the clutch disc to run on. Typical service manual suggestion to replace all wear surfaces when doing a by-the-book repair. Not likely needed, but if it were scored it should be replaced. Same goes for the inner hub. Both are aluminum and not repairable. But I have not yet seen one scored up on the DL 650 or 1000. I also don't see the clutch steels showing wear, but don't see the DL 650 pieces so not sure about those. I would just buy the friction plates and a new gasket to have on hand if I were to open it up. I suspect you need a new clutch cable most of all....
