First of all don't be worried. Most everyone runs "87" Octane in the Vee and they can actually run better using that instead of premium ( that is a whole other argument I'll not get into). Double check your manual for how it describes the Octane requirement. There are at least three common methods for determining the octane rating. I think the rating used on pumps in the US is R+M ( Research and Motor averaged ). Someone feel free to correct me. The manual may be using another method.........for its recommendation.

its R+M then divided by 2 for a average.
for example, 84 Motor octane + 91 Research octane divided by 2 = 87 R+M/2 IOW's US 87 octane aint really 87 octane, its only 84.

The manual recommendation is 87 for North American fuels which use the (R+M)/2 calculation.

2003 using 92 octane

I used to run 87 octane. After 77,000 miles I have switched to 92/93 octane. I am not getting the pinging I used to get. 46 mpg in warm weather, down to 43 mpg now in the upper 60's. It certainly runs a lot smoother. Try it, you might like it.
